I deleted Silverlight as I could see no benifit. Is there any reason to have Silverlight?

If you use a website that uses Silverlight (not many). I have it installed, I never notice it cause any problems, so I just let it be.
-
Here's one site that uses Silverlight: FractLOL! - robburke.NET as does NetFlix.

There's no real bloat or anything with SilverLight, and without it, certain websites/functions don't work. Why not install it?

I agree silver never did me wrong........it's my friend.....

H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw

pita: problem is, silverlight is actually better suited for streaming. flash could do it, too, but till now hasn't implemented it. the way it's usable in silverlight is auto-adaptable to cpu, gpu and bandwith, so instead of hickups or what ever, you could just get an a bit more blurry picture if you download something beside, etc.
silverlight is much less of a resource hog typically, too. it's really a nice platform, and the showroom platform is, too.
i'm glad i don't have to install any adobe products on my systems ever again. it's a bit cheating, chrome has it integrated. but i like to not have to care about updates. silverlight does it trough windows updates, which is great. -
The problem is that it kicks Linux users out of being able to use Netflix. I have a MythTV media center, so it's really freakin' annoying.
I have much less love for Microsoft than Adobe. Adobe's older products may be bloated, but they've made some great strides with it recently, and Adobe is properly cross-platform, unlike anything Microsoft does. -
I just keep it installed. No reason not to, IMO.

but you're onl inux, it's obvious you don't have much love for microsoft. -
This was a corporate power play, designed to get the Silverlight install base increased so they could fight Adobe. Nothing more, nothing less. Flash was working fine and developing nicely for Netflix, it's just that Microsoft came in with pantsloads of cash.
That said, I do have Silverlight installed on my Windows machines. I use PlayOn on my desktop so I can stream to my media center. I just don't think Silverlight is a great technology. It's another instance of Microsoft buying into a market because they wanted to, not because they had a bunch to offer or did anything different. -

silverlight is a side product of their .net framework, and nothing big in itself. so no, it's not another instance of microsoft buying into a market bull.
and it's understandable that the drm isn't in the opensource version. it would be nice to release a binary only version for linux, though.
i did some development in flash, and do some in .net (not that much in silverlight). if i have the choice, i would never ever touch flash. it's very inefficient and uselessly complicated. and the video support is much less than the one in silverlight. it's right now the best option for streaming, really.
but in the end it doesn't matter. discussion is about having it installed on a windows pc or not. there's no harm in having it, there can be harm in not having it => uninstalling it is stupid.
Win 7 to Silverlight or not
