I bought a Win 7 key off of eBay soon after the release last year, and it's been working fine until just yesterday when the updater said my copy is counterfeit and I can't download updates. I don't really mind doing with updates for awhile, but I'm wondering if they'll be able to shut down my system if I don't pay up? I guess I should have known the key was fishy, but I decided to risk it for $25.
Anyway, is there any way of knowing whether I'll be able to go on using the key as is, w/o updates?

The most you won't be able to do is download some updates and you don't mind being logged off every few hours (or did they fix that with 7), along with some features not working. You're better off just buying a real key next time. -
It's probably a MSDN or Technet key that someone sold. Microsoft found out and shut them down.

It was too good to be true
Win 7 updater just started telling me my copy not genuine
