I bought a Win 7 key off of eBay soon after the release last year, and it's been working fine until just yesterday when the updater said my copy is counterfeit and I can't download updates. I don't really mind doing with updates for awhile, but I'm wondering if they'll be able to shut down my system if I don't pay up? I guess I should have known the key was fishy, but I decided to risk it for $25.

Anyway, is there any way of knowing whether I'll be able to go on using the key as is, w/o updates?

And you're wondering why it came up as non-genuine? You should be lucky it lasted this long. It was probably a technet key that got blacklisted off the list of Valid list.

The most you won't be able to do is download some updates and you don't mind being logged off every few hours (or did they fix that with 7), along with some features not working. You're better off just buying a real key next time.

It's probably a MSDN or Technet key that someone sold. Microsoft found out and shut them down.
