Hi, I got my new sager yesterday and was working on getting windows xp 64 bit on it.
Apparently there is a problem with the intel chipset driver, making usb ports fail. I would strongly prefer not to clean install, as I don't have access to some of the software I had yesterday.
Is anyone aware of fixes for the usb chipset related problem for winxp x64? Microsoft support does not offer a hotfix driver.
I do not want Vista x64. I'm looking for an answer that does NOT involve formatting.
The chipset in question is 8.7.0.1007 for intel.
edit: the laptop in question is a sager np 8662. Haven't been able to find people with this problem, as xp x64 is rare.

Does Sager provide 64 bit XP drivers? If they don't, and you are unable to locate any 64 bit XP drivers from Intel for your chipset, then I think you'll have to settle for an operating system that Sager and/or Intel supports for that particular chipset.
-
sager's drivers broke mine.
some of the drivers work, and some don't : / -
let me expand on that:
I never tested the USB ports without the chipset.
I installed them and everything seems fine.
Microsoft's set of hotfixes cover XP x32, Server 2003 x32, Server 2003 x64, but not XP x64.
What I wanna know is - are there any other chipset driver options for me? I don't know enough about chipset drivers, and I'm having trouble finding info. -
With laptops, with very few exceptions usually you can't go VFR direct to the component manufacturer for drivers. If the laptop provider, in this case Sager, doesn't have the drivers then you can be out of luck.
Have you tried installing x64 and not installing any Sager chipset drivers? Sometimes the Windows chipset drivers work. -
no, i haven't.
is there no way to obtain the original chipset without formatting?
edit: repair off winxp cd maybe? -
You can try a repair action. You can also try uninstalling the chipset driver from the device manager, but I don't know if that will work.
-
i can't find where the chipset in device manager
i'm also not sure what to dl from the net, in terms of chipset drivers. i'm guessing they're all hardware specific. -
seem's I can't find a straightforward way to repair either. If I could find the chipset driver at least I could try to roll it back.
maybe upgrading to vista 64 bit would be a solution? hmmm
anyone else? -
The easiest solution is to reinstall XP x64 and then not install any Sager chipset drivers. Regarding downloading chipset drivers - you have to find and use the chipset drivers designed for your chipset. According to the Sager support website, they do not provide drivers for XP x64. If the standard XP drivers don't work, you just won't be able to run XP x64. They do provide Vista 32/64 bit drivers, so 64 bit Vista will work.
Contact Sager and ask about XP x64. That's about all you can do at this point. -
And why do you not want Vista? Stabler, safer, easier to use, intelligent and self-optimizing, plus a much better resource manager. Using XP on new computers is such a waste of power... -
Well, if you insist on XP-64, and also refuse to consider _Vista-64, then your primary interest cannot be maximizing system performance.
-
yeah, i think i've come to realize that xp x64 is just not going to work.
time to figure out how to boot off a usb.
thanks folks
EDIT: last ditch effort to repair xp x64. I'll report the results for posterity.
Then I'll further investigate this vista x64 > xp x64, (mainly because it'll take time for me to set up a USB boot for vista anyway).
EDIT2: well the mouse works, let's see if everything else does.
Any idea what the risks/drawbacks are of running with an ancient chipset? -

and unguaranteed stability when using an os that most people don't use? (no one uses it except some freaks and special hw/sw configs for special application needs).
use vista 64, and start to love the "new way" (which is, by itself, rather old by now)
Win XP x64 USB failiure! no hotfixes??
