Is there a way in XP to download updates so you can see what they are without having to use IE? It does pop up some updates for me, but it doesn't tel me if they are important or show me if there are other ones available I would be interested in.
I like how vista shows them on my vista machine.

If you use automatic updates doesn't it have that little yellow shield thing on the task bar that tells you "updates are ready for your computer". I can't remember if it says whether they are important or not as I have turned off automatic updates on my XP notebook at work and my dv5z uses vista.
I know you have to use IE in XP to see all of the info on the updates etc but I don't know of any other way in XP to view updates; XP just wasn't designed to get updates through a management utility like vista does, AFAIK it has to use IE.
Perhaps someone else knows of a way... -
Yeah, XP uses IE for Windows Update.
If it downloads automatically, a little yellow shield appears in the notification area on the task bar. XP doesn't use a stand alone utility like Vista and 7. -
I set the Automatic Updates to "Notify." It will pop up when updates are available and let you chose which to download and install.
Win XP-Update how Vista does it?
