I got my girlfriends Dell E1505 now, and first thing i did was ofc, format the disk, and reinstalling the (better) windows.. (xp pro) ...

but then i got myself thinking...

    1. - is x64 windows better for dual core proc?

    2. - there were some mediadirect partition, and 2 fat32 partitions (not used by anything)... can i delete those partitions too, or is it good to leave like a gig or 2 of space for "nothing" ?

    thx.

1 - Nope. It's better if she has 4GB of memory, though.

2 - Mediadirect was for your quick-play features. Too bad you lost that. The other two partitions are probably for system reinstall. You might need to call Dell and pay for restore media if you want those features back.

1 - x64 is basically Win2k with the XP GUI...I've heard of far too many driver issues to want to use it.

Only use XP64 if you have a reason too. For example your 3d app is written for 64-bit.

But for the most part, 32-bit is better. Drivers, and even things like Quicktime or video codecs won't be as much of a hassle.

Nah, technically it's Win2k3 with 64-bit extensions. And it works fine for "regular" hardware. Your GPU, sound card, chipset and such will all have working drivers. Digital cameras, scanners, printers or webcams *may* not have working drivers.

Some antivirus programs don't work under x64 either.

There's not much advantage to using it though.
