OK, Intel's Vista driver for the PM965 chipset that runs an Intel X3100 is ancient... really ancient, the Win7 driver in contrast is newer.

So, I just installed the Win7 driver recently - and it installed fine (with a little "can't be verified" warning) and runs fine too.

The only "issue" I can see with the Win7 driver is really a non-issue - a "odd screen" for a few seconds during boot after the windows status bar.
I wonder, is there any way to get rid of that? Or is it just something I should ignore?

if it like any other intel driver its covers vista and win 7
so there isnt just a driver for win 7 on its own for that chipset

as for the problem have you tried a reinstall of the driver

-> Well, the graphics drivers specifically only state one OS - as opposed to say the rapid storage drivers.
And I know that people here had issues getting the Vista drivers to run on Win7 at the start, i.e. there might be a small difference.

It's not really a problem - more an inconvenience.
Reinstalling also won't help if it's caused by the Win7 driver - unless I maybe try to install the driver via the device manager (you gave me an idea here).

My impression is pretty much as if it's the template for a status bar...but let me try fiddling around with the driver.

    Edit:
Can't install via device manager -> needs to be the installer.

It likes to stop working/crash when you unplug the laptop in "Vaio Optimized"... oddly enough not in the battery saver power plan.
I suspect I could use the ancient Sony driver as an alternative...

obvious question; bios and os up to date, most current chipset drivers in place, no memory problems for the IGP?

You know Sony :D Updates are rare.

-> My guess is the chipset drivers are up to date. Bios, not a lot I can do there (and yes, latest one, on a soon 3 years old laptop)

    IGP? Integrated Graphics Something?

Is there anything wrong with that driver, save the fact it's older than the other one you're trying? (I mean, is it an actual Vista driver?)

You seem to me to be manufacturing a problem that doesn't need to exist, purely for being able to have the 'latest' driver. Unless I'm missing something?

-> What's wrong with the Vista driver:
    a) it crashes sometimes when I unplug the power supply, especially if I'm in "Vaio optimized", the only solution would be to go to a three year old Sony driver that I know performs worse
    b) Not entirely sure where the overheating of the X3100 comes from, it could be that the cooling isn't goo enough or the thermal past bad, or the driver is at fault -> that I don't know.

And now - it's a Win7 driver on Vista, as I wrote from the very start.

OK - you didn't put in the post above that you knew the Sony driver performed worse.

All I knew was that you'd tried the W7 driver because the Vista one had problems with the power plans, but then you threw in the mention of a third driver (the 'ancient Sony' one), without saying why you were trying to upgrade from that one in the first place.

Just trying to make sure that it wasn't your unnecessarily upgrading a driver that worked fine that had originally caused all this!

The Sony driver is from 2008 - and I do remember a difference in Age of Empires 3 on that (a long time since I last played that).
The Vista driver is from May 2009, and the Win7 driver is from 2010.

I find it rather irritating that Intel doesn't offer drivers for Vista any more...

I suppose I could go back to the Sony driver, but it's a horrible one to install for some reason, and it generally takes me several attempts. (it throws up a UAC warning for a process it needs)

It sounds like the W7 driver is the pick of the three then, if the only problem is the weird screen on startup...

It does... -> I will see whether I run into any issues with it in the future - right now it seems fine.

-> I was just wondering if there is a way of getting rid of that screen...
If there isn't I'll just live with it.
