    Hi,

I have a computer that is claiming the Windows is no longer genuine (after running fine and happily being authenticated for over 2 years). No hardware has recently been changed, so I have no idea what even caused this issue.

I went into the computer properties to try re-entering the product key, and it won't even let me do that. Reading the Windows help pages seems to suggest I have to fully reinstall the OS from scratch?

Does anyone know how I can avoid having to do this? Maybe startup/install repair with the original media?

    Thanks in advance!

Did you update any drivers? It did that to me when I updated my IRST driver

Also try removing your key by doing this:

In the elevated command prompt that opens type:

slmgr.vbs /upk then hit the Enter key

Then see if it will let you re-add it

Thanks for the suggestions - I just went to give that a try, and now the OS is happily reporting that it's genuine...?

I went to Windows Update and noticed that it checked for updates a little over an hour ago, so maybe a windows driver update broke it and then another one fixed it?

Either way, the problem went away (for now) - I'll report back if it pops up again.

    Thanks for your help.

anytime bro, so just removing the key wiht slmgr.vbs /upk did the trick? I'm a bit surprised ad you uninstalled the key now you should have reinstalled the key or maybe you did and forgot to mention it?

No, that's the thing - I did literally nothing (besides logging in and out, and restarting the machine). I saw the problem this morning, and when I went back this afternoon, it was fine.
