    HEY,
    Let's try this again.

I just installed windows 7 on my computer (custom).
As expected, all software was deleted.

I used SpaceMonger to look at my hard drive, and noticed that 30 GB are taken up by windows.old.
    You can see it here.

    You'll notice << RRbackups [12gb] >>
RRbackups ~ rescue and recovery backups from ThinkVantage Technologies ~ consists of 2 backups. I KNOW THIS (I made them).

I reinstalled ThinkVantage technologies, hoping I would gain access to this.
..I did not have access, I could not delete them.

Someone suggested that they could be part of the windows.old file.

So I deleted it and ran SpaceMonger again. This time, this is what I got.

When I click on the unscannable files, I can generate a list of the files...

    Here it is:
    album: http://img527.imageshack.us/gal.php?g=list1b.jpg

    Long list..
    List part1 : http://img527.imageshack.us/img527/5914/list1b.jpg
    List part2 : http://img690.imageshack.us/img690/1135/list2c.jpg

Question : Is there a way to free up the space?

I'm assuming that you can't use those backups, because they require the Vista OS.

    1. yes, as long as you have all your data transferred over from Vista

    2. As far as the backup images are concerned, try to see if R&R can find them. Usually, since these were created under Vista, it should be located in the windows.old folder as well. In any case if you plan on using those R & R backups anytime then just backup the windows.old folder to an external drive and then delete it.

    Update.

I deleted the windows.old, safely. My computer is 30 gb richer.

However, the 12 gb of space is still there. Spacemonger now refers to it as "unscanned" "unscannable folders".

Anyone know how we can DELETE R&R BACKUPS, without using thinkvantage?

Thinkvantage cannot see it for some reason.

Here's a list of the "unscannable" files...

Is there any way to figure out what exactly those files relate to/belong to..

I don't think it's too safe to just delete the files...

I wouldnt delete all of the unscanned files. These are usually system files. But check under the recovery and R&R folders listed there and see what is located in there. Plus, did you keep the recovery partitions or did you delete them during the upgrade.

I haven't deleted the unscanned files.

    I deleted the windows.old file completely. :-\

I don't have access to the R&R folders.

    **********************************************************

I went to folder options... I let myself see system files.. and now I can see RRbackups in my C:
    1) it's a hidden folder
    2) it keeps telling me I do not have access to the folder/not accessible.

UGH.. someone's gotta know his(/her?) stuff well enough to figure this out...

Was your goal to get rid of the old "S:" and "Q:" partitions when you installed win7? Perhaps you forgot to do this during the first few steps of installation (when you chose your installation partition)?

Here is info about removing the Q: partition:
    http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-70829

Although Lenovo don't want you to remove the S: partition, you can safely do so and the machine will still boot. You will just lose your factory image, unless you have proper recovery DVDs.
