We all know both xp sp3 rc1 and vista sp1 rc1 has been released and specially vista sp1 rc1 is quite good!

But what about xp sp3 ? my own experience is that its waste of HD and only screws over your custom ui... or am I missing something?

What do you guys think of winxp sp3 rc1 ? worth it?

    thanks.

I'd like to know that too. :)
I just really hope it's nothing more than a rollup of all the hotfixes thus far. If it aint broke, don't fix it. :)

    That's how I feel, unless it's a Major overhaul like SP2.

Yeah, nothing major. Basically its just a rollup of patches/updates/hotfixes and couple of new features which dont affect the performance. I didnt notice any of the 10% improvement claim floating around the web.

    10% isn't as big as you'd think so. if you got 25FPS and now 27FPS in game, that's a 10% increase :p

Ofcourse not but if people are expecting some sort of general performance improvement over SP2 like what is expected from Vista SP1 over Vista RTM, thats not the case.

I see no reason why it shouldn't be.
That's the point of a service pack after all. Bundling up all the existing hotfixes and patches and applying them in one go.

I don't see significant speed difference myself. One thing I notice is that the battery lasts longer and the laptop runs cooler. So I gather it was a power management thing.

For me sp3 was well worth it. Mainly because I'd been running sp2 for about 1 year 6 months, so I was due for a format. Well, I did not want to do that since I'm moving back to my laptop only soon (many reasons why on desktop, completing a project, etc). Anyway, I installed sp3 and it cleared up all the issue I had... runs a heck of a lot faster (like a new install), and has no issues.

Figured I'd give it a try since I was going to have reinstall anyway... my old build was on its last leg. All the installing and uninstalling software (this was before I started using virtual pc 100% for testing programs).

Speed: as I said, like a new build... but has not slowed down yet.

New features: no, nothing new that I can see...

Issues: more important than features, IMO, sp3 has no issues.

I'm still debating if I should install this on my laptop, which is a new build... not sure... might wait for the final release of sp3. Although, I have outlook 07 installed on the laptop and some have said there are increases in speed when opening outlook 07.

I noticed zero performance change. Then again I installed it on a fresh install machine.

I do notice some improvement on Office 2007 except Outlook which still takes awhile to load. Reviews say 10% improvement but for a regular joe like me it's not much but gamers it's probably more noticeable. RC1 suffices for now.

I believe it is, just add the throttle key and edit boot ini like you did before and your good to go. Someone correct me if I am wrong or maybe Golph will jump in and confirm this.
