    WinZip 12 Pro is $50 and WinRAR is free. What would be the primary advantage to purchasing WinZip 12 Pro if I was only using this type of program for casual decompression of downloads from time to time?

    7Zip is free, better that WinRAR.

    WinRAR is technically not free...it will incessantly bother you to buy it.

    You don't even need 3rd party decompression. XP and Vista have built-in decompression software. Just right click on the zip file and click extract all.
