Anyone tried this update yet? I can't seem to download the update for some reason :-/ Windows Update says I am up to date..
-
It will probably be out later today. I got it off my MSDN sub, if you dont us the start screen or windows 8 apps its not that much different.
-
hahaha, thats the thing. I am pretty weird. I prefer the Metro Style instead of the Desktop Mode. But I just don't like the way you have to drag it down and hold it to close the app. In the new update they just add a 'X' button if I am not mistaken. It will change a lot of things for me!
-
Yes I noticed that had changed. I had got used to dragging apps down and now there is a top bar with X button, I liked the drag method but whatever.
-
Is it out yet? I want to install it on another drive.
-
So I installed it. I like how much more condensed the app view is now and right clicking. I don't use the start screen ever. I have it set to go to desktop and start brings me to the app view. The one thing I barely use is any of the windows store apps, however I was looking forward to closing them now with an actual close button instead of dragging. Unfortunately, it seems closing this way only suspends the app kind of like purely dragging down and doesn't fully end the app like when you drag down and hold until it flips. So if you close apps using the close button, you will still have to go to the task manager to end it completely. I haven't found any setting for how close works so I assume it can only suspend the app, which is kind of bittersweet to me.
-
Edit: nevermind
It seems that the Store is automatically pinned to the taskbar.
-
Yes, I realize that as well...That was the main feature I wanted in this update and Microsoft blew it..

Win 8.1 Update 1 now PUBLICLY available for download from Microsoft website (without having to go thru Windows 8.1 Update Center in Control Panel).
-
Mind posting the direct link? Microsoft's search is pretty crappy on their website. :hi2:tonyr6 likes this.

Search neowin. There is a KB number ending with 55 that takes you to the Microsoft download page for the entire 8.1.1 package (5 files/900MB total)...

Download: Microsoft Update Catalog

I agree it has been like that since the Windows 95 days.
Here is where I found it yesterday searching on Google.

Thanks, is this the only one I need on a fresh install? :hi2:
Thanks all ! -
looks like the web sites are chiming in, I think a lot of them are biting tongues waiting to see user reactions. I noticed the start menu is stated at a future undetermined date as well, it looks like the company is doing the same to see if this update was enough to bring over desktop users. IMHO the harder it is rejected by those who have not upgraded yet the faster we will see that start menu and possibly other enticements to get people to join the upgrade ranks. Again though with no experience with it here it may be enough, it is not for me to say.

I'm willing to wager there are more laptops than desktops out there running in "desktop" mode. It's hard enough to have to vertical scroll with the laptop's touch pad. Having to horizontal scroll across the All Apps screen is unnatural on a touchpad.
-
You should be able to vertical scroll for horizontal movement. I don't understand what is so difficult about scrolling on a touchpad. It's always seemed seamless to me, both one finger and two finger scrolling.
-
Agreed, I have been laptop as a DTR for quite some time now.
-
You're missing something.
You confused "here's something we're thinking about doing in a future release" with "small usability update." -
Fingers were designed to flex/extend vertically, not horizontally, while holding down the left touch pad button.
-
I don't understand this motion. For me, to scroll across All Apps, I simply place two fingers on the pad and gently slide them right or left. I don't need to hold any buttons down or slide unnaturally. (this is an older ThinkPad not designed for Windows 8)
-
Has always been that way for me since my first laptop in 2003. I can scroll with the special scroll areas at the touchpad edges. But that feels a little weird, I almost never use them. My thumb is always on the button, ready to click on something, and my index finger centered on the pad.
-
Oh, so you do it a very specific way that is from 2003 and does not represent the way it's being done on modern trackpads.
Gotcha. -
Chill out dude. Have you ever watched a movie, and have someone suddenly interrupt you? Literally takes you out of the movie! Same thing with the touch pad. If I move my thumb away from the click button and do it often, it takes away from my computing experience.

Not only can I not download the update, but since trying to download it I cannot install any Windows updates at all.
Does anyone have any suggestions? -

Strangely, it's now stuck at 49%. I'm suspicious McAfee is to blame here.
As for your suggestion, my operating system is allegedly not supported. Yes, really.
EDIT: We're now at 53%! -

Ah, disabling McAfee did the trick.
-
I agree. I avoid touchpads and carry a mouse no matter where I am because I abhor touchpads. They are a crutch for me if my battery dies, forget mouse, or if I just need to get on quick and check something without getting my mouse out. With touchpad as primary cursor input, it's surprising that so many suck so bad.
-
You'd think that by now, they would have gotten around to writing decent drivers. Given how the mac trackpad sucks on Windows compared to OS X, that is a pretty good indication of how drivers can make or break a device. I had to tweak the sensitivity settings on my M6700, but at least, it registers my fingers properly and is working as intended when I use it.
-
I recently purchased a Mac mini along with an Apple BT keybd and Apple trackpad. No surprise the Apple trackpad works ridiculously well. Everything on the trackpad works smoothly. Pinch to zoom in Safari and 2 finger scroll up and down is amazing. I have found no such experience on the Windows PC side.
-
I agree, I have found nothing as good, but I've found pretty good, just not OS X good. That said, I hate all clickpads, so the trackpads on the macbooks, no matter how good are a no go for me.
-
I've recently battled with some Lenovo clickpads. I just cannot understand how hard can be to point at something and then do right click on it... pointer never stays in place
-
killkenny1 Too weird to live, too rare to die.
I dunno, these touchpad drivers on T100 are pretty good. I've expected they would be way worse than they actually are.

Why do people insist on calling it Update 1?
AFAIK, I've never seen MS doing that.

I guess because we all know a second major update will be approaching this year as well. What I don't get is the whole calling it 8.1.1 considering 8.1 is just a marketing name and Microsoft never even once changed it for the updates. Also, the build version isn't any different, it's still 6.3.9600.

That doesn't make any sense, as if everyone thinks they know more about W8's future than MS. That, or MS's own name isn't good enough. I don't get it.
If the next update will be 8.1 Update 2, MS would obviously call the current one Update 1. This isn't the case, so my only guess is that the next version will be 8.2. -
M$ has its own understanding of the naming nomenclature. I have observed they stay far away from calling it Windows 8 anymore and now seem to prefer "The New Windows". My guess here is that it is preferred to say the update to the new windows rather than Windows 8 service pack 1 etc.. For the real truthful reason they would have to spill the beans and TBH I am sure it would be some spin anyway.
The primary point here is hopefully updates will keep coming until the UI is acceptable to consumers. then finally we will see some real market saturation. That is so long as consumers trust them to not yank the rug right out from under them. The fact they will force you to update or suffer the consequences has me worried a bit. What if once we are all on a usable windows 8 they decide to revert back to an unusable desktop UI and then force us to use it or else? -
I actually got used to the dragging and now prefer it over the X. They are saying they did it to make it more mouse and keyboard friendly but I didn't mind closing by dragging and I use a mouse.
