Those days are gone - it is actually governments and institutions that are at the forefront of a switch to Linux - because it is cheaper for them. It isnt consumers driving linux adoption

Then guess what happens after a few years when all those "dont know better" people, who have used linux and other open source software at work, then decide what to buy at home.

At that point I think you will find that there is a true rebellion about the "Microsoft tax" on new PC's/laptops. In other words people may refuse to pay for that software if a free one is out there. Just like people used to pay for a browser and dont any more. That woud be the slow death to Microsofts main source of new adoptions.

But for the moment, yes indeed they are effectively forcing people to get vista on new machines.

Never believe for a moment that the general populace has any intelligence. Individuals can be and ussually are half way intelligent, but not the consumers at large (and there are times when yes, I am a consumer).

Who ever has the most advertisement and marketing power will dominate, regardless of whether or not the product is worthy. Look at the *crosses his heart and creates holy symbol for protection* iPod and iTunes......I just hate anything limits your freedom of choice.

Unfortunately, I am also a gamer at heart, so I am stuck with windows, like it or not. Until a DX10 game becomes available, my choice is XP. No other reason to change yet.

Yeah, I'm very much a gamer and I may need to keep Windows for work but I'm not upgrading to Vista until it's absolutely necessary. I am, however, going to set up a dual boot over spring break because I'm unable to actually take a much needed vacation...

I object to your basic premise though I understand your enthusism.

To the point, s/w is a limited-quantity necessity in much of the free world. As automobiles, utilities, and airwaves, I think s/w, as much as I hate to say, should be regulated. Mr. Gates has overshot the capitalist (sp) tenents of much of the free world.

The security of my copy of his OS is at peril because HE has decided to remove necessary OLD security upgrades from distribution. I'm not suggesting M$ has to keep guarding the os (let's say 98SE) from all new hacks of it. In this case, M$'s actions are solely to increase their profits.

I object to placing the complete control of the product, I purchased the use of, solely in the company that provided it to me.

Analagous to an automobile, a car breaks down from driver use, the elements and other drivers smashing it for me.

There's is no way I have the needed control over all the factors that describe my ownership of the use of W98SE. I think I should.

If I wish to upgrade to XP or Vista I should have an unencumbered choice in the matter.

NO i don't like Vista because of two issues.

    -Resource hog
    -UAC.

I'd stick with XP for at least 1 more year...

Windows has always been playing catch-up against the Mac OS, Mac OS had a GUI before windows got past MS-DOS.

In terms of operating systems the current Mac OS X Tiger (and the new revision leopard i think coming soon) hands down crushes Vista.

Strange those 2 geniuses were working together at one point?

initially vista is a peice of #*&%@ with all the buggy drivers and things but soon its advantages over XP will turn into larger advantages.

An operating system is supposed to just run your applications, so I don't see what's there to get excited about.

The fact that it's slower, has bugs, makes me want to stay away for as long as possible.

I've been using Vista. It's ok, if a little convoluted, because they changed a bunch of things for apparently no reason.
Vista running with 1 or no processes tends to use about 30 to 35% of memory. Luckily I have 2GB so its fine.
UAC is irritating, though not quite as much as I thought.

Other than all that, I dont see a single thing really improved from XP, except the visual scheme (Aero does look really cool). Laptop came with it, it serves my needs. Eh.

I think the Vista OS is extremely successful. Especially because 75% of the people saying no are probably Mac OS and Linux users.

Awesome program. I was very hesitant to get a laptop with it on it, but i was forced into it, just because I waited too long. But I have to say, unlike my ME and initial XP experiences, the Vista software has been amazingly bug free, fast, and very easy to get around in.

I must say, I have been pleasantly surprised.

I really like vista, although I didn't really want it yet. I wanted to wait until at least SP1, but I couldn't get the laptop I wanted with XP on it any more.

It won me over though. It looks amazing. It works really well. I've had no crashes since I started using it... which is more than I could say for XP.

The only problems I've had have been the result of 3rd party drivers or programs, which isn't really the fault of Vista.

albeit vista isnt a vast improvement on xp it is better. unlike some people i have no issues with start up and shut down times, it shuts down in 5 secs and starts in 30, fairly respectable. it's just siimply a nicer OS to work with than XP, UAC is a pain in the arse but ill forgive it for that.

i find that most programs start in half the time than they did in xp, itunes used to start in about 6 secs now 2-3, this is a good thing :)
