Hi all, I don't know if I should put this in this location or not, but it is windows related. I just got a "courtesy call" from an Indian sounding man (I mean no offense by this) and he told me that Windows was being hacked in an undetectable way and then gave me the whole if you pay them money they will help you spiel. Have any of you gotten this before?

This is a old scam. I think I got a call two or three years ago. Except then it was a virus. To bad the elderly fall for this, and people that don't know a lot about computers. Some evil people in this world.
-
Yeah, it is dirty taking advantage of people who don't know any better.
-
Yes, old scam but still very effective. I know a young lady that got caught in this scam. So not just the elderly are falling for it.

They called me and said my Windows computer had a virus on it. So I asked them which one? They didn't know how to handle that question. I think I broke their script.

I received the same call and so did my mother-in-law (luckily she is computer-savvy enough to know its a scam). They called me three days in a row. In the end I told the guy to F off and they haven't called back since.

I would think people know better just due to common sense. Microsoft doesn't do 'courtesy' anything...let alone courtesy calls to inform people of a potential flaw in their product.
-
get them now and again but on a regular basis.
depending on mood i either string them along for 5 to 10 minutes making out they are my bet friend who is here to save me and then when i get board they hear how what i really think of them or i just let rip from the start until they hang up. -
There is a video on youtube from Linux4unme where they call him and he strings them along for 30 minutes trying to install their software. In the end he calls them out while telling them they wasted their time since he runs Linux.

I really hope that I get a call like this, just so I can screw with them.

One Ars Technica journalist also got a call like that: “I am calling you from Windows”: A tech support scammer dials Ars Technica | Ars TechnicaMrDJ likes this. -

I found this post on Reddit was interesting. http://www.reddit.com/r/talesfromtechsupport/comments/w79zp/i_got_one_of_those_scam_calls_today/
Be cautious with the links in the comments... -
My nan fell for one of them but it was "avg is going into liquidation, we are going to refund you money" I mean why would they refund her money when they have their own debts? Anyways I walked in as she clicked the send or whatever button it was on Western union, £60,000 got taken out of her retirement money that she saved 50 years for don't trust anybody on the phone!

Shows even in the Matrix universe they have bad battery technology.
I heard one user set up a virtual machine loaded with viruses. Then they let these scam guys connect to that virtual box and do their evil.
