I seem to be having an issue with this update on my XPS 9550. I am trying to use the Upgrade Assistant to update from 1809 to 1903. (All previous upgrades have worked fine in the past on this system.) The tool downloads and prepares the upgrade just fine and prompts me to restart. After restarting it stays on the Dell logo screen for a minute or so with a spinner. Then it just shows the log in screen and I'm back in 1809. The Windows.old folder it creates during the preparation is no longer there after the restart, so I'm guessing something went wrong and it rolls back. There is no indication or message at all stating that the upgrade failed. Is there any common issue that can cause this, or anywhere I can see what exactly failed?

    1) You need to have all your drivers updated before attempting to update.

    2) Try the manual upgrade tool: https://download.microsoft.com/down...85-9E63-AEAED1B9E98E/Windows10Upgrade9252.exe

Thanks, that did the trick! I last updated them about six months ago, but didn’t think it’d be that picky. I ended up updating a few things...
    • Updated BIOS and reset to BIOS defaults
    • Updated Intel RST/RAID driver
    • Updated Intel graphics driver
    • Updated NVIDIA graphics driver

I tried the manual upgrade tool in the link above for my Gigabyte P35xv5. After a long period of updating, it rebooted, "worked on updating" to 27%, then rebooted again and hung after the initial Gigabyte logo . Ctrl alt Del produced a reboot to the same point. I forced it to shut all the way down with power button. When it rebooted, it reversed all the changes and went back to 1809. There is a Windows10 Upgrade folder with a mix of new and old files ~ 3 GB. Not sure whether to consider deleting it. 1809 seems back to normal. Will sit tight for now.

    Any thoughts?

As far as I can tell, the only thing I didn't do was to reset bios to defaults: NVIDIA driver was most recent, all Intel drivers were most recent except Bluetooth (I have a Killer 1650 Wifi, and I have the most recent driver from Killer installed. Bios is most recent. The Intel driver check has one a bit more recent. I will try installing it and resetting to defaults.

Would you like me to remotely login to your laptop to update all your drivers from A to Z?

Thanks for the offer. BY the time I saw it, I had updated the Bluetooth driver, reset the BIOS to defaults, and tried again. Same result. I think I will take a step back and see if I can figure it out. Perhaps by then there will be a newer version. :)

Windows patches is same for all languages. But it's still Guinea pig version :D https://www.ghacks.net/2019/05/25/m...7935-for-windows-10-version-1903-major-fixes/

Microsoft released KB4497935 to the Release Preview Ring and the Slow Ring on May 24, 2019. The cumulative update for Windows 10 version 1903 fixes several known issues in the operating system including some that prevented systems from being upgraded to that version of Windows 10.

A new Servicing Stack Update, KB4502374, has been released as well. Administrators who install the updates manually need to make sure that they install the Servicing Stack Update before they install the new cumulative update.

I double checked all drivers. 1903 was offered as per Windows Insider. However, I cannot find the Servicing Stack updates - and the update has now failed in the same manner 2 more times - it hangs at the Gigabyte logo, just after the first reboot. Ctrl alt del will cause it to restart, but then back to the same place. Only way out is to force full shutdown with power key - then it reboots and removes everything, reverting back to 1809. I had turned Fast Start off on this machine - but I do not think that is the problem. I would have thought that the Servicing Stack would have been included in the update via Windows update. When I check for updates, it starts downloading 1903 again.

    Any thoughts?

Your system specs, please? There are few blocks in place for PCs with creative soundblaster, intel hd audio and hd gfx drivers, realtek sd card readers, specific nvidia drivers etc... Even I can't update from 18362.30 to build 145.

Specs are: Gigabyte P35xV5 4k display, i7-6700HQ, 980m/8Gb, 32GB ram, 1 TB (Samsung EVO 850) SSD, 250 GB Samsung OEM SSD 1 TB (Samsung EVO 960) SSD, 1TB hard disk, Killer 1650 wifi. Internal sound is Intel display audio (Driver date is 04/19 - should I uninstall?) and Realtek (both original spec), Realtek PCIE card reader (Windows thinks it is current driver, though 2018). Intel driver assistant thinks everything is up to date, and Nvidia driver is 430.64. Mouse is Logitech USB mouse - I tried one install with it disconnected - just with internal Elan touchpad (drive updated). I also not only turned antivirus and firewall off, I uninstalled it. Nothing else is connected to it for this install. Thanks for your assistance.

I think its because of Logitech usb mouse and realtek SD card reader(PCIE). Even updated drivers and still can't update windows.

After updating many drivers, and removing Samsung Magician (suspicion), I have tried several more times with the same outcome. So, I thought I would download the ISO and try that. I was able to download it to a USB drive. I had some difficulty in getting my computer to boot from the drive, but when it did, Setup loaded - then wound up telling me it couldn't run from a USB. So, I went back into Windows and tried to run setup from there (as instructed), only to get the message that the upgrade cannot run on a computer with a USB device connected. I will try moving files to an internal disk, but do not have a lot of hope for this. :(

I ran it from a folder on my SSD, and it ran to the same endpoint. Error message said it failed during first boot - Error 0xC19000101 - 0x30017. I will look to see if any information concerning this error - usually, the error codes from the MSofties are very nonspecific and unhelpful (like "it didn't work". Arrrgh!

You need to mount ISO and run setup.exe to start the manual upgrade. If you're Clean installing windows Use HBCD PE or Sergei Strelec and use WinNTSetup to install windows v1903. I used WinNTsetup because USB boot said some crap error and I simply went with WinNTsetup.

I'm not sue I understand. I am not doing a clean install because I have too many apps that I use all the time. I did mount the ISO on a USB, but when I ran setup.exe from the USB, it gave me a message that it couldn't update because I had a USB device attached (catch 22). Booting from the USB also failed. Running setup.exe from a folder on my SSD also failed. I have been looking through the logs to see if I can figure out if there is a device that is causing this - so far, no luck. Thanks for your interest.

I've the same issue like yours and its my 5th clean install. I'm downgrading to v1809 and it has better support for 24-36 months since the build is LTSC which is supported with 5 years to 10 years of updates.

I have dell xps 15 9550. I never manually updated any updates ever manually. I never done any bios update ever. Had this laptop for close to 3 years. Reason not touching bios is because i heard you can brick it.

But few times when i turn on or off laptop, i gotten message of windows updating and then showing the percentages etc and then it updates itself. So whenever i see it updating when i click shut down my laptop, i let it update, then it turns off.

Will any of this be an issue when i update it to 1903? I have last year's 1803 windows update which i did last year. Update had zero problems. But does this mean i can just go the update my usual way?

Now, BIOS updates are shipped and flashed via UEFI capsule from Windows update. So, disable Windows update for max lockdown.

"I never ever travel by car, airplane, bicycle, bus or train, I heard they can crash" ;O)
Several bios updates (security related, labeled critical) have been issued by Dell.
    Anyway, none of my concern.
