I stumbled on this a few weeks ago so I did a search in this forum and came up empty. Has this been verified that if you go to Settings then click on Check Updates, Windows 10 considers you now as a beta tester for future patches both security and non-security?

That would depend on which build are you referring to?

From what I can gather it appears this policy started with Build 1803 and continues with Build 1809, which is the latest.

Yes, I read that too, when you click on check updates, MS will install what it considers beta updates as well, with you having no say, or choosing which. As a matter of fact, with all updates being bundled together, you don't even know what are you getting either way. I had hundreds of errors logged in with Windows trying to update some drivers on my laptop, failing and trying again, failing and trying again and again. Since I can't find where those bad drivers are, I disabled all the updates, all the driver updates etc. You can go here https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4464619 and download updates manually, on your terms, or let it be.

That some misleading comments so where did you find the support for this claim? You left so much info out know to know what is truth and koolaid. They do cumulative updates now if you haven't been reading up on updates. My updates have not had issues like you and like I said your provide not much background to know in your case. -
I'm sorry but what misleading comments are you talking about? I also read the same story that OP mentions, that's all. If you never heard about it, here is one:
https://www.howtogeek.com/369656/do...-unless-you-want-unstable-windows-10-updates/
IMO the whole Win10 is in betta and if you want to argue with that see fall update, but that's another story. -
Auto update usually ships somewhat stable updates. If you hit check for updates button manually several times you might get B,C,D level updates where one is worse than the other. Insider releases on production stable build w/o enrolling into insider releases.

Also, this appeared in an NBR thread a few weeks ago posted by @Papusan - http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/windows-10-redstone-5.823238/page-50#post-10836153
See the 2nd part of the post, which references this link https://www.ghacks.net/2018/12/14/here-is-another-reason-to-avoid-check-for-updates-in-windows-10/
