" Microsoft’s new Windows File Recovery app helps recover deleted data "

    - Have you ever accidentally deleted a file and wondered if you can get it back?

    - Microsoft’s new Windows File Recovery app will assist in recovering files that you may have deleted and want to bring back, or resolve issues with corrupted data.

    - The Windows File Recovery app can be downloaded via the Microsoft Store on Windows 10

    https://www.onmsft.com/news/windows-file-recovery

Remember when Norton Utilities used to do cool things like this? Regardless of what was then, this is a much needed utility for Win 10 world.

"This Registry trick lets you block major Windows 10 updates"

    - a Group policy and Registry tweak that allows you to specify the specific Windows version you wish to stay on and prevent new feature updates from being installed.

    - With May 2020 Update, to simplify the Windows Update experience and prevent confusion, Microsoft removed the defer feature update setting for users running Pro, Enterprise, and Education versions.

    - ... new Windows policy called 'TargetReleaseVersionInfo' that prevents Windows 10 feature updates from being installed.

    - To specify the target release version of Windows 10, follow these steps: ...

epguy3 let us know they removed it in the post above. Who knows how long the work-around in this article will be effective.

"Microsoft announces new Windows 10 Start menu design and updated Alt-Tab"

    - Other improvements include a new taskbar layout

    - Microsoft is introducing a new Windows 10 Start menu design that will de-emphasize its Live Tiles

    - “Beginning with today’s build, all tabs open in Microsoft Edge will start appearing in Alt-Tab, not just the active one in each browser window,” explains Microsoft.

    - The default taskbar appearance will also now be more personalized with the Xbox app pinned for Xbox Live users or Your Phone pinned for Android users.

    https://www.theverge.com/2020/7/1/2...ows-10-start-menu-design-new-alt-tab-features

The sooner we can erase Windows 8 UI from everyone's memory the better. But the Alt-Tab for open tabs?? Can't wait to they see most ppl I know who have 25-150 tabs on their browser at any given time. That feature will quickly be placed in "File 13."

    - Microsoft has released two out-of-band security updates to address remote code execution security vulnerabilities affecting the Microsoft Windows Codecs Library on Windows 10, version 1709 or later.

    - The security updates addressing these security issues will be installed automatically on all vulnerable systems unless automatic updating for Microsoft Store apps is disabled.

    https://www.pcworld.com/article/356...ajor-changes-to-start-taskbar-and-alttab.html
The overall design is more reminiscent of the Windows 10X UI Microsoft demonstrated earlier this year, with a more minimalist approach that Microsoft said was deliberate.

Windows 10 bug triggers driver update loop: how to prevent it Windowslatest | Juli 4th, 2020

After the release of Windows 10 May 2020 Update on May 27, some OEMs such as Asus have pushed out an updated display driver to better support the update. Unfortunately, some users have come across a display driver update that stops midway with vague error messages.

According to several threads posted on Microsoft’s answer forum, Windows Update would keep pushing an older driver even when the driver has already been successfully installed and the process gets stuck in an installation loop.

Here’s the cute part: I’m seeing reports that the bug isn’t limited to Win10 version 2004. Other, older versions of Windows apparently trigger the same error.

Of course.... With new Features Update all older versions has to suffer.... http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/windows-10-2004-20h1-20h2.830339/page-20#post-11016568

The problem with Windows 10 really boils down to core values. The imbeciles developing it actually want it to have a crApple look and feel while being better suited for a smartphone or tablet. Because they are idiots and striving for that, the chances that it will ever become a respectable OS for a PC is very unlikely. It's unfortunate that we have dumb-dumbs like that making decisions because it's also unlikely people like us will ever be happy with the product, or the people behind it. I really do not want to move to Linux, but it looks like they may leave us with no choice but to move that direction. And, they (Micro$lop) shouldn't have a surprised look on their faces when that happens. But, they will only because they are dumb enough to believe everyone agrees with their way of doing things.

If I give up benching, I no longer need Windows.
    Capture.JPG
Linux can do everything else I need to do, just as well or better in most circumstances. Some compromise with gaming, but I'm not compelled by gaming anymore.
I can take it or leave it at this point if it doesn't run on Linux.

I'd like to see him do some testing whilst having "Ultra Low Latency Mode" enabled in NVidia Control Panel....I feel there could be some synergistic benefit between hardware scheduling and said control panel variable - in as much as I have a hunch that Ultra Low Latency Mode might work better (fps & stutters) when hardware scheduling is enabled...just because it's all happening on the GPU, the GPU is the master of it's own destiny....but that's only a hunch and a quick test by a poster on Guru3d forums showed the opposite, but it was only a couple of games & in my view non-conclusive.

Hmm, I'm not a fan of that change, the traditional control panel seems to be the simplest option to use so far....might just mean getting used to using the Settings App, but initial impressions are that it is less informationally dense and requires more clicks to get where you wanna go.

Microsoft's new Windows 10 Alt+Tab plan looks like a mess
    https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/ne...ew-windows-10-alt-tab-plan-looks-like-a-mess/

In what is being called a productivity enhancement, Microsoft is testing a change to the Windows 10 Alt+Tab feature so that it also shows open Microsoft Edge browser tabs.

As someone who continually uses the Alt+Tab to switch between applications, in many cases without even realizing I am doing it, this being enabled for me would not be an enjoyable experience.

I routinely have 25+ Windows open, and I can often have 20+ tabs open in each of my browser windows.

    Open browser tabs

Without open browser tabs, my Alt+Tab screen is already quickly overrun with my open applications.

If I was a Microsoft Edge user, with this new feature, my Alt+Tab screen will become a complete mess and make it almost impossible to quickly find the open windows I am looking for.

Enjoy your Windows Tube infused with a little bit of Edge spice!

Windows 10 blocks feature updates on PCs with unsupported settings Windowslatest | Today

The latest feature update ‘Windows 10 version 2004’, also known as May 2020 Update, is plagued with issues that could potentially cause Blue Screen of Deaths and wreck apps or core features of the operating system on some configurations

Guys, I am really getting fed up with Micro$oft and all of their broken garbage. The product management system we use at work has a letter and report template function that does a merge of data from the product management system and exports that data in a Word template that downloads locally for final editing in Word. The product management system exports client and customer names, addresses, dates, file numbers, etc.

Well, about 10 days ago something changed with M$ Office (probably an update) and suddenly now we are having nothing but problems with the exported documents being broken or even blocked from opening properly due to “security issues” being blocked. The templates have company logos (JPG and PNG images) embedded in the headers and footers and M$ Office views those images as "threats" and resorts to draconian tactics to "protect us" from the boogie man. In this case, we are the boogie man, since everything is our proprietary creation, so all they are doing is interfering with production and creating headaches.

I have spent several hours trying to figure out a solution. Such a huge pain in the butt. I found workarounds, but they are so complex that I will never get ordinary computer users at work to be able to understand and follow the directions to do their work. There is no excuse for it and even as an advanced user it is very aggravating to have to open, convert, close and save, reopen and recover the document, then save it with a new name and a .docx extension. Just a massive waste of time and energy.

Well, today I said to hell with the whole shebang and downloaded LibreOffice and * BOOM* not a problem one opening those exported .doc files and working with them using LibreOffice Writer instead of M$ Word. Simple and flawless. So, I guess my solution is going to be that everyone will begin using LibreOffice instead of M$ Office. It is simply not worth burning any calories on trying to use Word to get the job done.

I am also really stepping up my efforts to replace Windows with Linux. Still lots of software I cannot use that I want to use (primarily for benching and gaming) but I have got to say, the hassle-free experience makes me just want to wash my hands and abandon the notion of having anything more to do with the Redmond Mafia and their non-stop flow of screwed up digital trash. These alternatives to Micro$lop products are not as robust, but the unnecessary rigmarole of dealing with their screwed up crap really sucks.

“As reported earlier, I had the very same issue. After getting in contact with their support, Microsoft replaced my Surface Book 3 with a new one. Unfortunately, the new device was again affected by the buzzing,” another user noted.

And why not force their latest and greatest OS on own junkware before they push it over on others who don't want it?

M$ Surface is a glorified Chromebook. It should be running Chrome and sell for 8 or 10 times less. It seems the only thing left that Micro$lop is actually good at producing is XBOX and even that is open for debate. Even if you believe that to be true, you'd have to be a fool to believe that it will continue to be true. There is no basis for believing it will be based on past behavior.

The Micro$oft business model is to produce amazing products and then systematically destroy them.

I tried and failed. You can't get 100% compatibility with docx, xlsx, pptx etc... Even if you use openpyxl library to read/write xlsx files there will be compatibility issues in future when huge amount of data is stored 200MB-1GB files.
What I follow is to use OfficeRTool with LTSC branch and update every year during March/April so that my experience will be consistent and no-updates-policy will be great help.

The problem we have encountered is actually the opposite. It's the old .doc format that is broken now, but I think the Redmond Mafia is aware of the problems and working to resolve them because it turns out to be affecting tons of business users. Some recent security patches (as usual) is what is causing the problem.

But, the situation I mentioned needs backward compatibility, not forward, so LibreOffice works flawlessly for what we need until Micro$lop fixes their mess.
    Kind of seems like it.

Maybe downgrading to Office 2003 or 2010 with no updates is better than waiting for them to fix their mistakes. Same concept as sticking with Windows 7 or Windows 10 1809. Newer isn't better, it's just more screwed up.

OneDrive app prevents Windows 10 v2004 update for some users windowslatest.com | July 9, 2020

Windows 10 May 2020 Update (version 2004), which was released in the last week of May, is still not available for all devices. Various configurations have been blocked from installing the May 2020 Update...

In June, Microsoft noted that it has started training its machine-learning algorithm to automatically upgrade version 1809 computers to version 2004 and there are plans to further expand the rollout of the feature update. This has to be stopped. Force more machines into this new OS mess? Great!

People should be thankful that the downgrade to 2004 is being blocked by their settings.
Two cliche expressions come to mind that are fitting:
    - Never look a gift horse in the mouth.
    - Be careful what you ask for. You might actually get it.

Was there something in the article @Papusan link relating to the Mail app? I did not notice anything relating to it. Did you discover some disturbing news about the Mail app? I don't use it, but I know some folks do.

I do use Mail app then again, it doesn't make sense to ship faulty UWP apps that don't work so I'm removing it to save some 200MB on Iso.

Ah, yes. That makes good sense.

Having been an Outlook user (and a very happy one at that) since it was first released in Office 97 I find myself in a bit of a dilemma. Outlook Express was also an excellent free email client. Probably still to this day the best one other than Outlook. Finding a decent email client is a real problem. I don't think a truly good alternative to Outlook even exists.

Outlook is really the only product that remains in Micro$lop's product line that I find compelling. I hate that I am so reliant on it because my goal is to ultimately eliminate Micro$lop completely and transition to Linux 100%. I'm not happy about that at all, but I am more unhappy at the thought of putting up with more crap and idiotic nonsense from Micro$lop. crApple/Crapintosh hardware and software garbage will never be something I view as an acceptable option, so that's where it leaves me. Things could have turned out great. Micro$lop used to be a great company that offered great products and I am sad to see where we are today. Linux isn't great either, but I view it as the lesser evil among the three options available.

On Linux, the situation with finding a good email client is no better, and I'd even go as far to say it is worse. Evolution is probably the best, followed by Geary. Evolution and Geary are very similar to the free Micro$lop Mail app. None of them are great products. Thunderbird absolutely sucks. I'd just use webmail to avoid it. I hate using webmail.

TL;DR - Outlook is the only decent email client that exists. None of the alternatives are good.

I recently started using paid Outlook on MSO Pro 2019 otherwise I used Thunderbird (still being used on Linux). Lately, outlook 2019 is super slow on branch 1909 and it is slower than thunderbird. Dunno the reason, everything opens slowly or never opens at all! Being observing it on Outlook mobile on iOS(Mom's) and Android(Mine).

Yes, Outlook can be slow, especially when I have 6 email accounts storing messages locally dating back 10 to 15 years, LOL. It's an attractive UI and superior organization that it offers that keeps me hooked on Outlook. With Thunderbird it is what I consider to be an extremely unattractive UI that turns me off. I value function and performance most, but if I do not like how something looks I won't use it even if it works well. I'm just kind of weird that way. I would hate Windows 10 even if it had none of the garbage that I despise and was exactly the same as Windows 7 under the hood simply because I consider it extremely disgusting-looking without massive tweaks to make it aesthetically closer to resembling the Windows 7 desktop environment.

I agree about Outlook's organization - and integration with Office is helpful as well. So, I continue to use it in the work environment. I think it is great if you are linking with an Exchange Server. However, I have had multiple problems with my two personal email accounts (gmail and verizon.net). Repeated requests for two factor identification, crashes, needing to uninstall and reinstall to get it too fetch mail. The biggest pain was that Outlook kept changing email servers on me based on some old data it had that said Yahoo was serving Verizon.net (it did at one time, but not presently. So I switched to Thunderbird for personal email. It works consistently and much faster than Outlook (outlook would take several minutes before getting the first email from Verizon, even in the absence of any other email accounts. I had several wasted calls with Microsoft trying to get Outlook fixed to no avail.

Yes, I have encountered some of that nonsense as well. Many of the issues with Micro$lop products revolve around their feeble efforts to make things "secure" and it seems the cure is often worse than the disease.

I think I finally have the two-factor authentication mess figured out with Gmail and Yahoo mail. Certainly has been inconvenient. Gmail and Yahoo also give me more fits on my laptop when I travel due to the geolocation bull crap. My desktop at home never misses a beat, but as soon as my laptop is in a new place far from home I start having random access issues and warnings about my account being accessed from a new location. I really hate that nonsense.

I really do hate Thunderbrid because of how it looks. I'd probably just endure the hassle of using only webmail before I would embrace Thunderbird. If they made it look and feel like something very similar to Outlook I wouldn't have an issue with it. It makes me feel like I am using a Linux software product that was released in 1995.

Windows 10 May 2020 Update breaks Outlook contacts search windowsreport.com | Today

Windows 10 2004 black screen bug bothers some users to date windowsreport.com | Today
Since Windows 10 2004 came out on May 27, 2020, it has had multiple issues, some of which are now gone. On the other hand, the new OS brought certain bugs that are as stubborn as they’re weird.

The black screen problem is a perfect case in point. It’s not your typical Windows 10 bugcheck, and as such, it has no error code.

Affected Windows 10 2004 users are now agonizing over the fact that, without an official point of reference, troubleshooting the bug starts out as a wild goose chase.

Hopefully, somebody will have them ready to immediately add back in as legacy apps like when the Redmond Mafia replaced the old calculator with the ugly bloated UWP trash version.

It makes it difficult to be optimistic about anything with Windows 10 when literally everything they do, with extremely rare exceptions, constitutes some sort of anesthetic atrocity, downgrade or loss of functionality, or results in a hit on performance, compatibility, or both. At this point, the situation is approaching a perpetual state of zero confidence with a sense of discouragement and despair, leaving nothing but a basis for feeling hopeless about the future of Windows.

Chrome and Edge's magic memory-reducing tech is dead for now pcworld.com | Today

The tradeoff in lower CPU performance was just too great to justify the reduction in browser memory usage in the Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome browsers, a Chromium engineer concluded.

In June, Microsoft bragged that its new, Chromium-based Microsoft Edge could see a 27-percent drop in memory use in conjunction with the Windows 10 May 2020 Update. Google said it would follow Edge’s lead. Now both browsers will see that advantage eliminated after a performance bug was found.

Because Microsoft now contributes to Chromium—the open-sourced underpinnings of both Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge—the segment heap improvements could be applied to Chrome as well, reducing the memory usage of that browser.

That changed this week, when an Intel engineer discovered that the tradeoff for less performance was in fact more CPU utilization, (The story was reported earlier by Techdows.)

Yeah, lesson has to be learned from this..... Never let any engineers from Microsoft touch working software from other companies. They can't even fix own brewed software or OS. Why let them touch it in first place?

Windows 10 May 2020 Update weird bug triggers ESENT warnings windowslatest.com | July 17, 2020

Windows 10 May 2020 Update, also known as version 2004, has resulted in Blue Screen of Screen, system failures, driver compatibility issue, and a host of other problems for some users and configurations. In addition we’re seeing a reappearance of the old ESENT problems after upgrading to Windows 10 version 2004. The feature upgrade appears to be causing ESENT warnings for a number of users.

The Extensible Storage Engine (ESE), which includes the ESENT.DLL, has been included in all release of Windows since Windows 2000 and it’s used by a number of Windows components including Windows Update.

Of course they had to break it before or later :)

A few users on Microsoft’s forums and Reddit noted that they have also noticed stuttering in games after having experienced the ESENT warnings.

“I was stuttering like crazy too when playing R6S, I went from 150fps to 40/50fps, it was causing the OS to stutter also,” one user noted. “I got this error playing and my game start to stutter for few seconds like crazy,” another user wrote.

Users have noted that rolling back to Windows 10 version 1909 or 1903 removes the mysterious warning message.
