It's been awhile since i've dropped in, hope everyone had a good Christmas and a Happy New Year ! :)

OK so here's my question, is it just me or do the Configure Windows Automatic Update settings in Windows 10 are totally ignored by the OS? So I edited GPEDIT.MSC and selected option #2 to notify before downloading and installing updates. So I go check for updates and it automatically starts downloading everything it finds. Then there's the trick to not allow Windows from updating your manufacturer drives in System --> Advanced System Settings --> Hardware --> Device Installation Settings --> Option NO. That doesn't matter either as it will download and install any hardware drivers it finds for your machine. The only way to stop any download or installation is to set Wifi to "metered connection".

One last question. When configuring gpedit.msc what does option #5 do (Allow local administrators to select the configuration mode that Automatic Updates should notify and install updates.)? I was expecting to find different options in the Windows Update window where you go to manually check for updates but it looks the same. Does option #5 even do anything or has Microsoft blocked that out as well?

My biggest beef with Windows 10 is still the forced updates and sending info back to MS. I can shut off the spying stuff with O&OShutup10 but it looks like MS has changed their update delivery with the Anniversary update.

no GPEDIT rule, registry hack, or anything else will stop the automatic driver updates unfortunately. The OSs ignores all those rules / settings unfortunately

the only way to get around them is to ensure you install all the drivers (latest ones) before connecting to the internet, at least you know what you're installing and they are coming from the manucaturer rather than having Windows install some generic ones like the generic Realtek Drivers which may or may not contain enhancements specific to your laptop

Thanks for the confirmation. Is there a way to pull manual updates from MS websites and more specifically if that does exist how would one know which update can be applied?

I'm tempted to just disable updates altogether.

Disable Windows Updates then via Group Policy Editor
