Windows 10 Update Questions

So i have windows 10 pro and my laptop is xps 15 9550. I notice seems like every few weeks or month or two, I get a message that windows needs to do an update. On the bottom corner, you see like the computer logo and it tells you need to install a new update the next time you restart/turn off your computer.


Many times when I see this, assuming i'm not doing anything important, I would just click restart now on it... or just turn off or restart my laptop manually and it would do the updates. I notice you could also set a time/date for when you want it to do it etc. Now a long time ago, I recalled I delayed for months... not wanting to do a windows 10 update... i think i delayed it for at least 3 months... because i heard some ppl had issues with the update... think it was window 1903... this was a while back... and one day... my computer just went to autoupdate itself without me wanting it to do this. I assume this was because I couldn't delay it anymore and windows had me update it right?


Now if I'm doing something important for the day on the computer, is there anyway windows would just automatically update without your permission while you are busy on the computer? Whenever I do the update its when im not doing anything important on the computer for now... or i do it at night. I guess this is almost never an issue unless you kept delaying the update for weeks or months right?

Has happened according to posts around the net. If feeling vulnerable, disable all updates, and reenable when needed. Then either use windows update or download\install any individual kb's. F.ex. disable it with O&O shutup10, or use any solution that fits one's use.

For me it is always an issue for anything to update, ever, unless I initiate the update myself deliberately... especially Windows.

 

Unless you have the Pro version of Windows 10 you don't have by default control on the Windows Update aside from the delayed updates.

 

That is one of the reasons I haven't purchased a Windows version lower than Pro since Vista Windows XP was released. The limitations of the lower versions are simply not worth messing with.

Edit: Had to stop and think when it started. It was in the XP days, before Vista, that I stopped accepting consumer noob "Home" versions of Windows.

 

Since XP I always installed the Pro or higher versions so I had controls in settings to change defaults. ME was one of the worst and drove me crazy til I dump it for good. I went from XP to ME(Crappola) to 7 and straights to 10x64 Pro and never looked back. I do have older systems that can only install 7 but those aren't for online purpose.

 

Yeah, Pro and Enterprise are the only way to fly. I still love W7, still consider it the best and still use it. I'm not particularly worried about it from a security perspective.

Windows 8.X was pretty stinking horrible, but not as bad as ME. I was initially super excited about Windows 10. I jumped on it as an existing member of the Insider program with great optimism initially, but I have never really viewed it as an improvement. I use it, but I've not gotten to a point where I can say that I think it is a good product and I really do not think I will ever actually like it. It has too many things about it that I dislike that overshadow the few things that I think are improvements. In its current form it is inferior compared to when it was released. They keep doing stupid things to make it worse rather than better.

 

For better or worse no one else has come up with a better O/S that can beat it and be used world wide and have software support across the board. So that's where all users are stuck at to be using.

I know users would sing praises of Linux(Unix) but so may Distro's and infighting hasn't help it unify as one O/S to help users to make a inform single decision. That's the biggest downfall of Linux they shot themselves in their own foot. And don't start wit iOS that' so Big Brother controlled no one will support it unless they have too. That's the driving force "Software Suppot" without this the O/S wouldn't be where it is now for Windows that is. Plus with Apple stumbling from the start didn't help itself Windows starting with having a GUI started the revolution and hasn't looked back.

 

A couple things you can do slow down windows 10 updates:

1. in the Settings app. Never click on "Update & Security". That automatically starts the windows updater and installs updates.
2. set your connection as a "Metered Connection". Windows "version" installs wont download until you let them. Metered is in Settings > Network > Ethernet (or wifi).
3. Use the TargetReleaseVersion to set windows not to upgrade to a newer version. (until your ready).

the small windows updates are mostly not that bad, its the big Version upgrades that can tank a system, so make sure your backing up your PC with imaging software before you do a Version upgrade.

 

Power users and geeks actually like having tons of choices instead of a cookie cutter crap OS built for the lowest common denominators. But, yes... if you are not into having to think or tweak things and just want something to use in the way it is handed to you, Windoze OS X and Mac OS are the path to brainless computing.

 

Personally i think its time for me to upgrade to Pro so i can have more control of my system and i am annoyed with auto windows updates lately. Since 1909 will no longer have support In May it gives me an excuse to do it. I was thinking of buying a key from Ebay or some other site and upgrade Pro and then use Reset This PC function so i wont run into activation issues if that possible. The OEM install is enough for me because my system doesnt have any bloatware besides Mcafee so its like a clean install anyways.
