The security improvements win10 brings to the table is a must as far as I'm concerned.
I wonder if I'm going to miss metro on my yoga though. . . -
I will upgrade both of my machines (ThinkPad W550s and Yoga 3 Pro) on day one...Build 10240 runs perfect on the Yoga 3 Pro already.
-
Not I.

1.) It forces updates, wanted or not.
2.) It forces even further control away from the user. (this is more an enthusiast thing).
3.) Still have not fixed Aero Glass. (my reason, final straw, for not adopting Windows 8.x)
4.) Even further fracturing the OS menu system.
5.) The culture of making my PC a device rather than a production machine.
6.) The new culture of this is no longer an OS but a service.
I could go on and on. in the end though if I want a consumption device I will use my Android Tablet! -

Regardless, windows 10 makes security administration nicer which is what I can't help but care most about.
They do need to hire a new graphical development team. -
Being as I am a home user, Security is not an issue here with Windows 7. I already am moving to Linux, With Mint 17.1 now. Some off line production though is limited to Windows 7 for now.
I am presently in the thought of making a dedicated machine for BR's and cancelling Adobe CC PhotoShop/LightRoom and converting to Gimp. Then the main machine can be linux and I can convert from NTFS to ext4. That is my one issue with Linux and dual boot is that there is no native NTFS support.Last edited: Jul 16, 2015 -
Hopefully with virtualization becoming more and more popular we will see better GPU acceleration functionality. At that point I can shove all my windows applications into a disposable VM that can get performance near running on dedicated hardware.
I do think that the windows 10 is a move in the positive direction for typical consumers and enterprises (particularly with their claim that they will be sticking with the platform for a good long time). I'm hoping that the popular linux distros are up to the task of filling the enthusiast market gap.
Now if I could figure out how to hack together some GPU accel functionality on my clevo w/ 970m. -
The only reason why I've voted "may or may not" is the fact that I'm still inclined to give the upcoming OS a benefit of a doubt since the RTM version is not out yet.
The way things look right now, I'll be holding onto W7 for years to come and eventually switching to some sort of *nix environment for good.Mr. Fox likes this. -
well to get that functionality, on the clevo 970m, expect to pay for the high end distro of Windows 7 as the forced driver updates of home will eliminate your hacked drivers. I doubt business will like the idea of paying for all Enterprise licenses to avoid forced Windows Update. This even if IT swallows the Service rather than OS deal etc. etc. etc..

My reasons for upgrading to Windows 10 from Windows 8.1:
- It will be always up to date
- They finally move away from the cluttered Control Center
- New features, some carried over from Windows Phone (like battery saver mode, for example), but also things like Windows Hello
- Less old Win32 apps, which were largly unchanged since Vista or 7
- Edge, which might replace Opera for me once the extension functionality comes in
- Much nicer UI (dark theme...) and build in apps compared to Windows 8.1
- Improved Aero Snap
- Its free -
To each their own. -
- Problem with always up to date is that whatever changes they feel like implementing you are forced to accept it.
- Control panel in Windows 7 was fine to me, although an improved one would be welcome.
- Features from windows phone, again I am not looking for a device.
- Internal 64 bit apps are a welcome change but was there a need?
- Edge, TBH IE is old in the tooth and could use replacing
- Nicer UI, yes nicer than 8.0 or 8.1 but enough to win over 7 users?
- Improved Aero snap but a lot of us want Aero Glass back.
- It is free as long as you are OK with loosing the old key after 30 days, You are OK to take and use only their updates, you are OK with your system possibly never having a true OS again, and later on in life who knows what you will need to be OK with. -
Interesting that we need three separate threads running concurrently to discuss Windows 10. This one has a poll, so that's different. Once it goes RTM, we can probably get by with just one.
I voted "no" on the free upgrade because it's a downgrade and deprives me of the autonomy to manage my systems as I see fit. I am going to use one of my disposable Windows 8 licenses to exploit the free upgrade for destructive testing, but there no way I will surrender a Windows 7 license in exchange for a crippled OS.
When they announced that updates are not allowed at the discretion of the end user is when they completely lost my respect. Some of the reasons are already mentioned in this thread, but there are many more in this thread: Windows 10
I may purchase Enterprise edition if that gives me the same level of control I have with Windows 7 and 8, but I will likely continue to dual-boot Windows 7 because it's the best OS they have produced, to date. I'm not worried about security and I don't need or want any of the draconian control freak crap that they are peddling as "security" features. There was already enough of that bogus security crap in Windows 8 to ruin it for me. -
MS is probably planning to make the biggest bank on their other various enterprise services that customers already buy and give major discounts on the OS itself.
My biggest concern is that 'always up to date' update model as this cannot work with the current enterprise update model as production environments cannot risk an unstable update damaging productivity.
EDIT: What's the solution to win10 DX12 exclusive if one decides to stick with win7/win8?Last edited: Jul 16, 2015 -
I said "no" for 2 reasons: Power Manager (the best battery & power scheme monitoring and adjusting program I've ever used) doesn't work on any version of Windows after 7, and I have an enterprise version of Windows 7, so it doesn't upgrade for free.

Solution will be to use either the older DX11.1 version of the game or look for OpenGL or other 3d engine. I doubt DX12 will for a very long time be a limiter in the ability to play a 3D game. as it is DX 11.2 is not a limitation and how long has that been exclusive now? As of yet DX12 has yet to prove itself useful let alone a must have.
Other side of the coin, with people who drank the Windows 8.x KoolAid windows 10 was almost a no brainer, with the license key loss and now the loss of update control they have put a real damper on the situation. This is reminiscent of the loss of Aero Glass and other issues right before Windows 8 release, just pulling the rug right out from under us.Last edited: Jul 16, 2015Mr. Fox likes this. -
Regardless of which API proves better I'll probably be using Vulcan for gaming on Linux. Here's hoping Vulcan can free us from the tyranny of exclusive APIs.Mr. Fox likes this. -
I voted no. Both of my laptops came with the Home versions of Windows 8, and I'm not touching Windows 10 Home with a 10 foot pole. (See what I did there?
)
-
Wait, let me hold off on all this, do you have links to prove DX12? -
BTW, updates were forced on older Windows versions as well. You can´t use Windows 7 without Service pack 1 if you want to get security updates...support for Windows 7 without Service pack 1 was ended in 2013.

well; http://www.ghacks.net/2015/07/02/computerbase-you-have-30-days-to-downgrade-windows-10/
Edit; actually going to the German site that started all of this the I have to wonder. The wording is such as usual. There is only one active licensing, which is normal. Where other sites claim it is the 30 days for the internal process. The translation seems to loose a few things, like it is the internal systems downgrade process and makes it sound like the old license is gone.
Now I am not too sure about what is being wildly reported. This COULD be sensationalism of the on line media. We really need some clarification here from the horses mouth.
Edit 2; I would have thought by now if the German site were so off, with others also jumping on the bandwagon, that the company would have put out a statement clarifying the situation.Last edited: Jul 17, 2015 -
killkenny1 Too weird to live, too rare to die.
Will upgrade my tablet, but not my desktop.

I don't believe its the original article I read, but it uses the same benchmarking methods. Nor do I have the wisdom to predict what the real world 3D acceleration performance boost will be based on these draw call benchmarks, but there clearly seems to be some major improvements going on in some areas.
Apart from any performance increases there will of course be the usual fun feature additions if you have a supporting GPU. Here's a couple features nvidia is touting on DX12 if your interested. -

NO, of course.
Thanks for reminding me, however. I just sent out a memo instructing my entire office to NOT "upgrade" to Windows 10. I had almost forgotten that, with the way Microsoft is aggressively pushing this crap on everybody, people may just be happily "upgrading" without thinking. It used to be that it required a conscious decision, and support from our IT department, to perform an OS upgrade, but now it's just a matter of people mindlessly clicking an "OK" button.MahmoudDewy likes this. -
Hi! Aero is back and they are working on add that into PC Settings
For now I turn it on threw the regedit.exe and everybody knows what that is! -
That said, its normally good to have a small windows OS partition for those times when one can't get a game to function natively or with WINE. It doesn't seem that win10 is a very good candidate for dual booting though.
If my school provides any fee copies of the Pro edition I'll probably slap that on over top of the OEM install on my yoga to avoid that nasty forced update system (I'm assuming OEM=Home edition). Otherwise its not worth spending additional money that I bought as a disposable system.
Rather I'm more irritated that MS didn't do away with the stupid version tiers like I was hoping. -

Nope,
LIke the saying goes dont fix anything thats not broken, i have no problems with Windows 8.1 with classic shell with my current laptop and windows 7 on my old laptop, so i dont see the point for me to upgrade to 10 anytime soon unless i buy a new laptop with windows 10 in the future -
I won't be for free, since I don't have any eligible licenses of 7/8. At this point I doubt I will be for non-free, either, though depending on the reception and whether there's a $40-ish Windows-8-like deal for XP/Vista upgrades, I could see upgrading a spare XP/Vista key for 10. On the whole, the move towards Internet integration (search, MSN articles in Universal applications and the Start menu, etc.), as well as the move towards automatic updates regardless of settings rub me the wrong way. I prefer to keep the Internet non-integrated unless I'm specifically running an Internet application such as a browser, Steam, or (back in the old days) AIM, and thus the automatic updating is more of a negative when Microsoft is moving more in that direction.
As for DX12, it was only a couple months ago that I bought a game that required DX10 instead of 9. So I'm not too fussed about DX12. I'm sure I'll still have plenty of pre-DX12 games I want to play in 5 years.
I do agree with ibmthink on not being much of an Aero fan, but there's no version of Windows that requires it - Classic Mode in Vista/7 works well enough - so that isn't really a factor in 10 for me. -
Seeing as I have access to MSDN through my employer, I'm probably going to to opt to use Windows 10 Enterprise. That's if and when I use it. Here's why, quoted from a link Ashtrix posted here:
"Only Windows 10 Enterprise users will be able to update in a way that resembles the current Windows 8 scheme. By opting for the Long Term Servicing (LTS) branch, Enterprise users will be able to defer feature updates for years, electing to receive only security fixes during that time. Microsoft is pushing most businesses to be on either the consumer release or, at worse, the Current Branch for Business, reserving LTS for mission critical systems that truly need this conservative approach." -
And Microsoft will be sitting there scratching their heads for years wondering why Windows 7 is still the dominant OS...

Hell no!
1. It's already a late to the show startup before it even gets started.
2. I just got MSI raid 0 ssd's that only Win 7 have Intel's ssd optimizing software to run that keeps ssd's from deleting themselves (lol, if you got ssd's raid 0 and DON'T have W7!)
3. Win 7 is STILL the Windows business os of the world and over 90% of windows users (near 100% from observations, but I'll figure 10% get the wrong information from retail and don't know how to load a W7 OS)
4. Hush hush startups are ALWAYS bad news.
5. Msft's start up (an OS) history is not too sterling of a track record; and all the third world countries Msft exploits for cheap labor, their past employees wreak security havoc to get their money back from Msft.
6. I've got 5 years to learn Linux and I'm figuring the next OS guru is just waiting for necessity (Msft striking out 2 OS's in a row) to make their appearance in the next 5 years.
7. What Msft has revealed is restrictive control-freak cloud rental crap they have tried before and never works.
8. The Msft Best Buy reps said Msft is just going to do what they want just like Google and Apple, lol: talk about the virtual reality glasses - time to take them off fan boys.
9. I don't have the time and money to adapt to Msft's new fantasy OS, since their only truly successful one (W7) was the closest to the original Apple software they copied (after sooo many iterations and years.)
10. THE ONLY REASON I'D GIVE IT A SHOT WAS IF IT WAS AN ODD NUMBER WIN 9 (their only statistical favorable trend): and those bozo's screwed that up!
Good luck to those of you who have time and money to waste on this fantasy OS. I've only got about 75 more years to live and I don't want to waste any of it on Msft's fantasy os that never makes it close to becoming a reality. There is no backup this time!
Peace. -

LOL. What a great rant. Thanks for the laugh - much appreciated - I love when people voice their opinions in such a manner. The truth hurts less when presented in a humorous way. -
75 more years? So you're what, twelve?

I imagine one can still disable Windows Update service to temporarily stop any updating should I find "Current Branch" to be unacceptable.
Oh well, all one can do is wait and see if MS is one of the companies that can successfully pull of software as a service. All I can say for certain at this point is that it will be messy. . . -

I like to be up to date, with the latest speed, efficiency and features my hardware can provide. If M$ decides they are going to try and take this from me, oh well, They need me as a consumer more than I need them to take my money.
It is so funny, when Windows 8 and the 8.1 came out I was lambasted all over these forums for using M$ as an abbreviation. Something I have done since the days of the command line/GUI wars. My how one further version of the OS can change things. -
1: Yes maybe not to much of a problem though
2: It makes it easier for the user
3: Windows 10 has windows aero (I turn it on threw regedit.exe)
4: I don't get that one
5: The heart of windows 10 is the complete opposite of what you said
6: Windows 10 is a service and for one reason only to make things better and better over time
So like i' am a Windows Insider so I know Windows 10 Pro yeah that's I have pro!
