I just bought a yoga laptop with Windows 10 home on it.
I'd like to upgrade it to pro.
When I google "windows 10 pro" I see there are a number of offers for windows 10 pro license keys from $10 to $39.
Are these legitimate?
I don't mind reinstalling windows as I like to start clean anyway -- I believe if you use the in place upgrade it's $100 from microsoft direct, so are the lower cost windows 10 pro license keys real or something to be avoided?

Those cheap keys can only be used with clean installations.

I don't really mind the time to do a clean install as I prefer to do a clean install on a new computer anyway to be sure there is no extra junk that I'm not aware of.
I see amazon also has "Windows 10 Pro Key & Download 32/64 Bits Link,License Key Lifetime Activation" for $20 to $28.96.
Is there a downside to purchasing one of these licenses through amazon for example? Is there a way to check immediately to be sure they are legit with Microsoft? -
I bought one of those cheap Amazon licences and it worked fine - legit and no complaints. A few work colleagues also did this a few months later and were shafted by another seller. The license that I bought was an OEM licence - to the best of my knowledge it can't easily be transferred to another computer but I've also never tried to do so.

Starlight5 Yes, I'm a cat. What else is there to say, really?
I bought mine for $4 or something like that. According to seller instruction, I typed generic Pro upgrade key first, allowed the system to upgrade, then fed it the key I bought - works fine ever since. Not sure about reinstalling - only did it once shortly after purchase, informing the seller beforehand.

Ah... that might be a hitch then. I bought the laptop from the Microsoft Store. Will have a look to see if I can see any info on that as soon as it arrives and I can look.
I found this while googling: https://betanews.com/2015/12/21/upgrade-from-windows-10-home-to-pro-using-this-product-key/ so maybe I'll try switching to the generic demo windows 10 pro product key to see if it will accept the product key change. (assume that if it accepts that product key switch, it would allow me to switch to one I bought from amazon and activate it)
Then if it does, I can purchase one from amazon
Does that sound like a reasonable plan of action? -

Live chat said I should be able to use my own windows 10 pro key to install pro on the laptop in question.
In place upgrade would probably be easier... but I kind of like starting with a fresh install anyway on a new computer that I install myself (glutton for punishment?)Last edited: Sep 26, 2017alexhawker likes this.
