    My son tried to update his ASUS X551M from 8.1 to 10 using the pop up that gives the free upgrade to windows 10.Something went wrong, the computer backed out to 8.1, and lost functionality.I tried the restore/reset,and it wouldn't work.It would reboot back into 8.1.I searched for a couple days and tried a few different ways to restore the computer. So I decided to download 10 to a flash drive.It was directly from Microsoft, and gave the option of upgrading the current version of windows,or doing a clean install.I went through the step by step process to do a clean install.During this,it ask to reformat the hard drive to Fat32,which I did.It rebooted, and now I get the blue screen of death saying something is missing.It gives me options to go to the restore/reset or BIOS.The computer will only go to BIOS.So I set up my boot order to boot directly into my Linux USB drive.When I checked the hard drive,it is now completely wiped,and divided into two partitions.The 10 usb drive is still asking me to format the HD to Fat32,but I can't.What should I do now to be able to install 10 on to the HD?I don't know how to format an HD when I don't have access to it.It's also buried inside the computer.There's no access panel to remove it.

    It simply surprises me what more than a sticky do people need to make this thread so obvious??????

    NBR Windows 10 Clean Installation Guide

    The HDD/SSD should not be formatted as FAT32! It should be NTFS and it should be initialized as a GPT disk. the guide has everything you need to do all this

    PS: When asked for a product key, just skip that process unless it doesn't prompt you which meant it picked the product key that is injected in his laptop's BIOS. If it didn't, then there is a way to extract the key from the BIOS and have it activated. Windows 7/8 keys work just fine to activate 10.

    =====================================
    1) Download RWEverything

    2) Extract the ZIP

    3) Right click on rw.exe then choose Run As Administrator

    4) From the top left of the menu, click on Access, then choose ACPI Tables

    5) From the top row, you will find a lot of tabs, scroll to the right, then click on MSDM

    6) Your product key will be displayed at the bottom near Data

    I was going by what the microsoft installer said to do.I have been through what you have posted, before you posted it.My post count maybe low, but I am one of the few that does actually search before posting.

    I have no access to Windows at all.I am getting a blue screen.Telling me that something is missing and windows could not start.

    You need to reformat the drive completely which means deleting all partitions on the drive. FAT32 is very outdated and Windows 8/8.1 and 10 dont support it on HDD/SSD. After that try installing windows 10 again but make sure that secure boot is off before doing so

    I went through all of that, again, and somehow it worked, and installed 10 without another incident.

    The bios kept resetting when I would restart the computer, to boot from the USB.It's doing it to me now,when I try to boot into my Linux USB drive.I'll get it.I usually do.
