Hi, I'm running Windows 10 Home on an ASUS Q551LN 2-in-1 laptop which originally came with Windows 8.1.

When I shut down/restart/sleep the machine, it does not shut down - the Hark Disk activity light is still blinking and the normal power button press does not work. If I do nothing, it remains in this state for hours. I need to press the power button for 5 seconds to reset it. Only then I can start the laptop.

This happens around half the times. The other half it works normally. I never had this problem with the OEM 8.1 on this machine.

Based on other threads - I have the latest Windows 10 updates, and disabling fast boot did not solve the problem.

    Thanks.

If I was to take a guess, I would say maybe you're having an issue with a feature called "Fast Start-Up". If I was you I'd try deactivating it to see if it solves the problem. See the following pic for where to find the "Fast Start-Up" setting - just untick the check box (you have to click the admin icon at the top of the page to enable you to access that checkbox though):

Hmmm, I'm not sure then. Perhaps make sure that your Windows install is not corrupted in any way. You could run a sfc / scannow command in an adiministrator elevated command prompt - this will scan your Windows files & repair any corruption - note that this may change any custom tweaks you've made to the OS. If that doesn't work then maybe a clean install or a "Reset" option to ensure a good Win 10 installation. (I'm just suggesting those two generalised approaches because I can't think what's specifically causing your problem - apart from the "Fast Start-Up" option which you've covered already anyway).

crazyfool33, try completely disabling the hibernation, that is how I disable Fast Startup / Shutdown stuff:

Run As Administrator, in cmd window:

    powercfg /h off

That will remove the hiberfil.sys file, which a 1x memory size file, and should stop your shutdown hangs.

Another possibility is a BT/Wifi driver issue, I had such a problem during the Windows 8/8.1 transition. Temporary solution was to disable BT / Wifi (whichever is the cause) and that stopped the shutdown hangs for me at the time. A new driver release fixed it.

Now that your license is upgraded to a Windows 10 license, I suggest that you do a clean install. Installing an OS upgrade is a big NO NO in my book. always leaves issues that are often difficult if not impossible to solve such as yours.
