Windows 10 has been trying to update for a couple of months (at least) now, with the messages of “Update Now? Pick a Time?” etc. But every time I let it try to update, it installs the updates, then restarts, then gets to 45% and gives a message of “Windows could not configure one or more components” error.
I’ve run the Windows Update troubleshooter, I have about 36 gig free on the OS drive, I've tried disabling my video card and wireless card and sound card, but nothing works. Always gets to the 45% point and gives that error. I have no idea how to fix this. Ideas?
Oh, Alienware M17x with Windows 10, no problems with past updates.

Which Windows 10 version are you using right now? There is 1607 ... etc...

Actually, managed to fix the problem, so I'll document here what I did in case it helps anyone. I was afraid after months of this hitting 45% on restart and stopping this error message, and seeing MANY posts online with people with the same problem and MS (and no one else) being able to solve it other than reinstall Windows, I'd never get it fixed but it updated yesterday after I did the following:
1. I deleted the folder with the Windows update files (so it had to start fresh.)
2. Even though my old GTX 680M laptop video card has been updated, I went to the nVidia site, downloaded the newest Windows 10 driver for it, and updated the driver.
3. I turned off Windows Defender Firewall.
4. After Windows went through the "Downloading update" and then "Installing update" and gave the message that a restart was required, I disabled my wif fi before the restart.
After those steps - and I don't know which was the one that made the difference - the update went with no problems.

This happened on the Dell Precision 5510 that I had when trying to install 1709. Ended up turning off IIS and the update went through

Forgive my ignorance, but what is IIS?

It may be something that's optionally installed. If it's not in services, you likely don't have it running.

Gotcha, thanks.

I've done everything above, I've disabled/uninstalled my video card and wireless card before rebooting, booted with no startup items running, deleted the update downloads folder, even tried to install Windows 10 keeping files and apps from a USB stick with the Media Creation program from MS. And I still get the error at 45% on restarts.
I'm out of ideas and I've googled this for a month looking for answers.
