I have a laptop with Windows 7 x64 Professional, activated and everything. I used Microsoft's Media Creation Tool to upgrade to Windows 10 x64. When I am in Windows 10 with an internet connection, I see that it is activated. However, the Windows version is Windows 10 Home edition, not Pro. My understanding is Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate editions will give you Windows 10 Pro when you upgrade. Something has changed.
I then did a clean install of Windows 10 via USB stick (ISO from Media Creation Tool), but there was no option to choose between the editions such as Home or Pro. It just installs Home edition by default automatically. Any ideas?

Did the system come with Windows 7 Pro or did it come with home or home premium? Windows 10 will pick your edition based on your OEM key if it finds one. Hit change product key in the activation screen and put in your Pro key and it should convert to Pro.

The laptop had Windows Vista originally, but I installed Windows 7 Pro two years ago. I decided to upgrade to Windows 10 so I can get the upgrade in before end of July.

Just change your product key and put the 7 Pro key in. It should activate Windows 10 Pro with a digital entitlement for the machine at that point.
