Is this April the 1st again, Microsoft will never stop making new versions of windows as long as there is money in it.

You might have answered your own question here, maybe there's not enough money to be made in 'new' operating systems. They are giving windows 10 away for free, after all, so there's literally no money to be made in this new operating system.

Their money is going to be coming from other sources, eg the universal app store on windows 10.

Last year alone about 300 million computers were sold, probably majority running Windows, even at $10 per oem copy it would be $3 billion market. I think MS is run by some bunch of donkeys, to put it mildly, for quiet some time.

They're adopting the Apple approach. It will be Windows 10 indefinitely but will have incremental version updates. 10.0.1, 10.0.2, etc. I figured it was going to go that route anyway when they skipped Windows 9 entirely. There will be OS X and Windows 10

This. Microsoft better start thinking of creative names for their incremental releases. I don't wanna see any more cats or Minecraft objects.

They already have. 8.1 was called Windows Blue.

I'm talking about official release names. Everyone knows 8.1 as 8.1. I was mostly being sarcastic but they do have Azure I guess so it's certainly not out of the question.

I guess you're right. Windows 10 Fuchsia would be best. We could call it WTF for short.

Well, looking at the possible Windows 365 approach as well, if you buy retail it will be Windows 365 only with an annual fee, or get it pre-installed on a PC in which case they will get their money that way.

Remember too, free as an upgrade does not mean free to OEM's for a new machine.

My little Acer 2in1 Atom Tablet came with Win8.1 with Bing, turns out the manufactures get it for free from Microsoft, maybe for using their Atom Cpu, instead of Amd, but they only cost like $15-35 each depending on the version, Do they take a loss to keep Amd out of the market.

Even free is never really free. There almost always is some stipulation and/or agenda.

There is no way I'd go for yearly fee, Id rather go back to Win Millenium, or much more likely Linux, isn't there free Dos floating around as well?
Seriously Linux people, get your act together: 2-3 versions at most, once every 2 yrs or so, security updates more often, concentrate on drivers, start charging and replace Windows as dominant pc operating system, MS is getting out of software business, this is your chance, people.

Windows with Bing basically just forces the laptop OEM to use IE as the default browser and Bing as the default search engine. They can be changed without issue by the end user. But you can't use a regular Win 8.1 build to do a clean install. I did find a link to one though because my Asus X205 $150 Atom laptop came with Windows with Bing. But yeah, this way Microsoft offers it for free, but the drones will use Bing and IE and create revenue.

    http://winsupersite.com/windows-8/windows-81-bing-revealed

Windows 8.1 with Bing "is similar to other editions of Windows," the documentation notes. In fact, it's just Windows 8.1 "Core" (32-bit or 64-bit) with Update 1.

With one difference: PC makers will not be able to change the default search engine using Microsoft or 3rd party deployment tools. So when a user who buys such a PC starts Internet Explorer, Bing will automatically be configured as the default Search Engine. And no other Internet Explorer defaults are changed. And, yes, the user can change the default search provider. Only the PC maker cannot.

Have a look at this article,
    ArsTechnica
what concerns me is the "Software as a Service" aspect - if they expect me to pay for that service, they've got another thing coming. I pay for software once, I don't subscribe to it. If I buy a new computer I'll buy another OS, but I'm not going to keep paying Microsoft for new versions of Windows - or Office, for that matter - when the one I have works.

I paid to go to Windows 7, because it was worth it - I got a better experience than I had before. I didn't pay to go to Windows 8 (or 8.1) because I didn't see the value without a touch screen (I have both 7 and 8.1 at work, without touch screens, so I know what I'm talking about). If I bought a new laptop I'd get one with a touchscreen and Windows 8.1, because I see the value.

But if the day ever comes when Microsoft says I can't get the latest fixes unless I enter my credit card information, I'm switching to Linux or *BSD.

A quoted reply - Agreed. I would be more than happy to pay a one time fee for many of the free programs I use such as Avast and Malwarebytes, but to hell with having to make a permanent place in my budget.

This looks nasty for end users. We all know that Win Auto update / updates are real hell when it hits the machine hard (thus the enthusiast user base disable that feature from registry - @Mr. Fox 's sticky here )

Pair this with UEFI Class III and gone the days of " Personal Computer". Why the M$ takes CrApple's direction always that Windows Phone died because of the similar stupid approach....*sigh*, An utterly stupid execution system... :vbmad:

Oh boy, Windows 365 is a possible approach, but I don't think MS will quit the one-time purchase market model anytime soon.

It's free for small devices under 9" screen. It's made to compete with free Android OS in small tablets. I don't think CPU maker has anything to do here.

My Tablet is an 10.1" so i must have payed for the Win8.1 with Bing then, and that means i have some rights for Microsoft support and other things.

    Thanks for the Info.
