That is so sad and true. Same here, everytime a family member like my mom or little sisters calls me on Skype complaining that their laptop is super slow please fix it. I login via TeamViewer and they have Windows 10 virus. all silently and nicely executed by Micro$h4ft
I am finding it very tedious to do clean installs (I don't trust rollbacks) of Windows 7 or 8 and I just end up cleaning up the mess by using O&O ShutUp10, and other tweaks. It is a sad stage we have reached in the computer world.
I have always hated Mac but after your statement now, screw it, I will keep this laptop for gaming and get me a Macbook Pro when the new refresh is released.

100% of Windows 10 users have the Microsoft Store which makes the Microsoft Store, not Steam, the most widely deployed PC game delivery system in the world.

It shouldn't count if nobody uses it though. It was there in 8/8.1 as well and I don't know a single person who used it after opening it and getting netflix and a few other things just to find out that they were garbage Metro trash that never worked properly.

So what? None of this changes the fact that the Windows Store (mea culpa; I've been calling it the Microsoft Store which is the retail chain) is more widely deployed than Steam.

Its getting ridiculous, I just got a prompt telling me that my windows 10 upgrade is scheduled in one week. There was no apparent option to cancel the upgrade and closing it would mean that I accept that schedule. I had to dig in the little links to find an option to cancel the scheduled upgrade.
I am sure if my laptop was being used by my wife or somebody else, they would have just closed the prompt and i would be in bit of surprise after one week.
And sure enough I searched online and there have been case of people getting notices of mere hours and some even got the notice when they were sleeping and woke up to a new OS installed on their PC. -
Install GWX Control Panel or Never10 (The former being better, IMHO) and never worry about that again - more tech sites need to be pushing them and pushing them hard, IMHO. There's literally no need for anybody to be dealing with these upgrade chenanigans when they have either of these utilities installed.

And even after all these posts you still have yet to elaborate on how massive adoption automatically translates into massive sales ("10% of Windows 10 users will buy a game") for Microsoft. Are you deliberately avoiding the question?Last edited: Jun 1, 2016

I told you before that Microsoft are copying Apple's play book verbatim.
Why has the iTunes store succeed? Convenience and instant gratification. Why has Apple's App Store succeed? Convenience and instant gratification. Why has Kindle succeeded? Convenience and instant gratification. Why has Google Play succeeded? Convenience and instant gratification.
It's a formula with a proven track record, and Microsoft are copying it verbatim with the Windows Store.Starlight5 likes this. -
Real gamers use Steam or GoG. That's not going to change. Microsoft may be able to get the mainstream to use their store but nothing will change for those of us who know what we are doing. Apple needed the store because finding Mac apps was next to impossible so it made sense.toughasnails likes this.

Except for all of the real gamers who use Origin because that's how EA delivers their games like Mass Effect and Battlefield. And all of the real gamers who use Uplay because that's how Ubisoft delivers their games like Assassin's Creed and The Division. And all of the real gamers who use the Windows Store because that's how Microsoft delivers their games like Forza Apex and Quantum Break.
No it wasn't. The Macintosh App Store is a copy-paste of the success of the iPhone App Store.LanceAvion and Starlight5 like this. -
I only use origin because it was forced upon me by EA. Steam on the other hand is wonderful game management platform with useful features. $.02

Well when the Windows Store reaches $20B in yearly revenue we can revisit how successful it is... The online sales for the top 10 for PC games totalled $6.3B and $6.1B for mobile games. unless I'm missing something none of the Microsoft offerings made the list.

.I leaved my laptop on for about half hour or so while i was reading and when i returned the update process started
.I was considering to update but not today.I hate when something isnt under my control and so stupid when windows updates by itself. So im a new user of windows 10.Any suggestions guys?what should i disable, remove etc?heard a lot of bad stuff about widnows 10,malwares inside etc..
edit:seems some apps were deleted.I cant find ccleaner anymore.I was before on windows 7 x64.Disk usage is switching between 99% and 100%?is that normal? -
First install of any Windows will generate allot of disk usage. This is the drive indexing and other household keeping chores. Over time this will normalize out
There are plenty of other threads here on what to do for an optimized W10 installation. Enjoy......Last edited: Jun 2, 2016 -

Glad I don't have problem with this nag. I used a Regedit GWX and DisableWindows10 registry edits and killed those two nags and malware type nags. So I can update all day long on Windows 7 and have no Win10 attempts to update to Windows 10. Some might want to check these two regedits and use them they are free and clean.

I'd expect Microsoft to start working around Never 10, GWX control panel, etc pretty soon. Watch what updates you install.
-
I think that's unlikely. Never10 and GWX Control Panel don't do anything weird. They use the settings toggles that Microsoft provided to enterprise customers to prevent Windows 10 from being installed over Windows 7 or 8. Microsoft making Never10 and GWXCP stop working would mean deliberately ****ing over their largest market segment. I don't foresee that happening. Microsoft bend over backwards to accommodate their enterprise customers.
-
Its not that difficult to remove those options from non-enterprise versions.
-
Nope, because it's not the sites deploying Enterprise editions that require the options.
-
This happened to my uncle, just after he had warned me about it! I ended up stopping the upgrade, but it was worth a chuckle!
-
FWIW, I have seen one -- count it -- out of one reversion from Windows 10 to Windows 8.1 work as advertised.
-
Fwiw I have seen zero unintended upgrades to 10....

It seems to be worse for some. No option to close the window.
-
Yeah they removed the "optional" part of it.

Since as of the ending of the upgrade those systems with W10 will loose the prior activation code this is theft for anyone not wanting the upgrade. Especially those not only not wanting the upgrade but determined not to get it. While there are many here able to thwart M$ there are casual users that can't.
It makes me actually happy to see Windows Phone fail so miserably. These tactics though may cause them to loose core consumers. I know they have lost this one at least.Ionising_Radiation, Ethrem, 6730b and 1 other person like this. -
Who is losing their activation code? You mean when they get a new machine? Because your old 7/8.1 keys work just fine...Spartan@HIDevolution, alexhawker and MidnightSun like this.
-
The last word is whatever you have installed as of the final date supposedly will be the only legal activation key. We know this will be somewhat hard to enforce with OEM activation keys etc. but I am talking the legality issue. Again there are those non techies out there that will hear "this is your only legal key" so that is what they will use. I am much more speaking here for the common masses not the 1-2% of users visiting this site.Spartan@HIDevolution likes this.
-
Microsoft is not invalidating old keys, it just is against the EULA to use them both at the same time. Removing Windows 10 and installing your old OS is completely legal both in the EULA and software laws. As long as you are not running the digital entitlement and the original OS you gained the entitlement from, you may continue to use any retail keys you have if you are not using Windows 10. The digital entitlement is not even linked to the activation key.Spartan@HIDevolution and alexhawker like this.
-
I will take that back then, the original issue I was using is a retail on another computer but at the time it was not discussed using that retail key on the same computer. This is just a new confusing issue that is cropping up since users are being forced to upgrade. So the good news is, at least what I can see, after 7/29 we get to do a clean install of the old OS. I still hope they choke on it but despite the severe inconvenience there may be an out.
I still do not trust them. if a year from now they total irk the PC consumer base will the only options for older systems be a fresh install of the older OS? It will be every day spent using W10 they will own just a little more. I guess that can be asid of any OS but none other have that over extended EULA. -

I use GWX control panel on all the pc's in the house. However, I forgot to go to my mothers and protect her system. She calls me, and tells me that the windows 10 upgrade window opened, and she had no choice, but to install it. She didnt mention anything to me for a month now. Her PC is scheduled with me to format, and reinstall windows 7. I really hate the tactics used, but gpw control panel is keeping me safe. Looks like Windows 7 is the last OS I will be using from MS.

Our most important priority for Windows 10 is for everyone to love Windows. Since we introduced a new upgrade experience for Windows 10, we've received feedback that some of our valued customers found it confusing. We've been working hard to incorporate their feedback and this week, we'll roll out a new upgrade experience with clear options to upgrade now, schedule a time, or decline the free offer. The 'Red X' at the top corner of the dialogue box will now simply dismiss the reminder and will not initiate the upgrade. We'll continue to be led by your feedback and always, earning and maintaining your trust is our commitment and priority. We recommend people upgrade to Windows 10 as it's the most secure version of Windows and take advantage of the free upgrade offer before it ends on July 29. -
Microsoft has paid a California woman $10,000 over an unwanted Windows 10 upgrade, reports the Seattle Times.
I wonder how many other lawsuits are pending against Microsoft. They can keep that crapware of an OS. -

I like Windows 10 and was happy to get the free upgrade from Win8, once you modify it the way you want and turn off all the snooping it`s a great OS.
I just wish Vista and older could get a free upgrade, Microsoft is pushing free Win10 so hard you think they would offer it free to older versions.
John.Starlight5 likes this. -
Tweaking it to reduce snooping, is only part of the problem. The lack of complete control of your own hardware is another. I for one, want complete control on how, and when my system updates anything. Including windows updates, and especially driver updates. Instead of updating a great and proven OS in windows 7, they completely shot there own foot with windows 8 and 10. Windows 8 will never surpass windows 7 in user base numbers, and the only way windows 10 will, is because of the "free" upgrade, and the trickery they used on unsuspecting owners that thought they were just closing a window.

Windows 10 eventually will eclipse Windows 7. With the loss of 7's support, the older systems aging out, etc. Windows 10 will (or current M$ O/S) should take over. What is not clear is that by then M$ could be facing more competition than it was expecting. This very well could lead to the discussions as to what is the leading O/S and competition.
This may eventually lead to porting of their cash cow, M$ office, to those other O/S platforms. This will keep them afloat but it could spell the eventual end of Windows as a PC platform.
With the tactics etc. I no longer consider W10 as a PC OS, to me it is more a mobile OS backwards compatible with the x86 programing. What is worse is that it is a poor implementation of a mobile platform as well.Last edited: Jul 8, 2016Raiderman, toughasnails and 6730b like this. -
