would installing vista 64 bit to utilise all 4gb of ram that is on my hp dv5 series notebook increase the speed of cpu intensive tasks such as video encoding?

Also, would I encounter any problems with any programs once I have installed vista 64 bit?

No. What you need is a faster hard drive for that. Obviously, more RAM is better and you should have at least 2GB anyway for good performance with Vista. But the hard drive speed is definitely your bottleneck.

You would probably be okay, but unless you have a program that you can prove would benefit from 4GB or more of RAM and/or a 64bit OS, it is not worth the hassle.

Awww Greg...don't be such a sour-puss. 64-bit is not a "hassle"...it's a "joy" even though sometimes it can be an "adventure" =D

Besides...personally, Vista x64 feels snappier and more solid to me than the x32 flavors.

I bet it's "smoother" on my Vostro...I propose a trade. I'll part with my Vostro for your Sager, straight up...so that you can have the ultimate computing experience. :D

64bit is nice, do not get me wrong. It is just that the OP already has 32bit installed, already has all his programs figured out, and has a single problem that is not going to be solved by moving to a 64bit OS.

If you want to, fine! But for this problem...that's like putting a band-aid on your knee when your forehead is bleeding.
