The Notebook Review forums were hosted by TechTarget, who shut down them down on January 31, 2022. This static read-only archive was pulled by NBR forum users between January 20 and January 31, 2022, in an effort to make sure that the valuable technical information that had been posted on the forums is preserved. For current discussions, many NBR forum users moved over to NotebookTalk.net after the shutdown.

    Do you mean Q1 of Y2005? In 2006 MS will be shipping their advertized Longhorn. It seems Win64 must already be in the market by that time.

    The Microsoft-watch website's most recent information is that "Microsoft acknowledged earlier this week that it won't ship its new 64-bit Windows server versions until mid-2005".
    The preview version of it can be downloaded here, on Microsft's website for 64 bit extended. They have updated the site today (9-24-04) with more current info.

    It looks like the beta of x64 is now available for public download. I'm wondering about the risks of giving it a try on my emachine m6811 ... and how difficult it would be to return to the OEM XP home edition using the restore CD.

    Use a partition program (Partition Magic is the best, but it is a little pricey) and install it on the second partition. This also works for Linux, if you wanted to see real-world apps in a 64-bit environment.
