I recently upgraded my laptop (asus f3) to Windows 7 RTM (the official release from MSDN). However, now Windows Live Messenger does not start. I have uninstalled it and reinstalled, but this doesn't solve the issue. I've also tried numerous other solutions such as, uninstalling fully and manually removing registry entries, installing older versions of WLM, restarting my router and wireless connections, creating another user account and trying, disabling windows firewall (Only firewall I have, and I have no anti virus software) etc etc. None of these things work. Everytime I click on the WLM shortcut or even via the programs files folder, nothing happens, and WLM doesn't start. I can see a msnmsgr.exe process for each time I start it, but no actual WLM window appears. Im also unable to kill the original msnmsgr process unless I uninstall and reboot my PC. The only time I can get wlm to work is when I boot into Safe mode, and then launch it.
Can anyone help please? Cheers

hmm.. it work fine on mine~
will check that out! -
Cheers! It's really bugging me. I did an upgrade from vista, but I dont see why anything should get messed up with WLM.

Clean installed W7 RTM + Latest windows live messenger & mail last night. They work fine.
Must be bugged from the Vista upgrade. -
Isn't there anything I could possibly do though to get it working? Even if it was buggered from the Vista upgrade, surely deleting it and trying again would work?

Tried a registry cleaner after uninstalling?
Make sure you delete ALL Windows LIVE programs -
Yea I used CCleaner to no avail. If it works in safe mode, but not in normal mode, I'm guessing theres some conflicting issue but I cant figure out what it is. I've even tried safe mode with networking, and it works fine there too.

Try creating a new user profile.

Lol done that too as I said in my first post.

This is odd I did a upgrade from vista business last night to windows 7 professional and my messenger works just fine. When the upgrade was finished and I tried to open messenger it didn't work however I just ran the windows live web setup utility and it told me messenger had to be updated. I let it update messenger and now it works just fine.
Even though I did a upgrade from vista, windows 7 is working just fine, no slow downs at all. All of my other programs work just as they did in vista. I have to say this is the smoothest windows upgrade I have ever experienced. -
Yea the upgrade went very smoothly. I upgraded from vista home premium to windows 7 ultimate. I cant understand why its not working. Im thinking of "re-upgrading" in the hope that it will solve it, but Im not sure if that will actually fix anything

Here's the solution:
1) Download and install ZAP Messenger (This will totally remove WLM from your system)
2) Reboot
3) Grab the latest version of Windows Live Setup and install the latest Windows Live Messenger.
4) Download and install the A-Patch (Make sure WLM is not running when installing A-Patch)
5) Enjoy -
Thanks I'll give that a go when I get home from work. Ive used Zapmessenger before along with Deep Clean to get rid of all msn related material and then tried but it still didnt work. Hopefully the addition of A-patch helps. Can I ask what it actually does? Also as soon as I install WLM, the msiexec and msnmsgr.exe processes remain. I can terminate the msiexec.exe process but not msnmsgr.exe...to do that I have to boot into safe mode and then open wlm and get it to not start when windows starts

Ok I just read up on A-Patch...It's pretty similar to MSNPlus so I don't think that's going to do anything, and I've already tried ZapMessenger.

I show Windows Live Essentials, Windows Live Sign-in Assistant, Windows Live Sync, Windows Live Upload Tool and Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition installed for Windows Live Messenger to work. Have you uninstalled all of them? If you have another version of SQL running, may want to remove it as well.
The following components are needed for specific Windows Live programs, and may be installed for you if they’re not already on your computer.
For Writer: Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 or higher
For Photo Gallery: SQL 2005 Compact Edition and Windows Imaging Codecs
For Photo Gallery and Movie Maker: Some components of DirectX9
