Trying to solve a problem with a friend's Windows 7 laptop. Every time he starts up the computer, this error message pops up:

Ideas? Google searching is not really helping me at this point. Why does the computer think a module is trying to be registered?

Go into msconfig and run the boot log.

Monitor Windows 7 boot logs with the help of msconfig - TechRepublic

See what shows up there. There has to be a program or command that is running RegSvr at startup. Be it part of an install/uninstall that didn't get finished, or something malicious.

If the log doesn't show anything, then event viewer will (in Administrative Tools).

Boot into safe mode with networking and then check programs for anything that has been downloaded since the activity began, suspicious is toolbars, search providers, ect , many programs now a days have other programs that piggybacked with what you want to download and hi jack your web browser home page and search engine unless do custom install or related to not download the extra programs they are including.

Looking at it could be an executable file that tries and loads a bogus module,,a boot or start up virus.

Get Free Malware bytes on usb stick or cd rom , install and let it check it out, in safe mode, it will update its definitions as your have networking active. Chameleon by malware bytes is worth a mention too .

    Cheers

Well, I found out he installed a bunch of strange third party software (including pirated stuff). He does video and music editing and downloaded odd things. He ended up restoring the computer to a previous point and the issue seems to be solved. I know I didn't really figure out what it was, but I'm sure it was the result of one of those programs that he installed.
