when i hover over the button in the lower right it doesnt do anything, i can click on it to show the desktop but thats not what i want. when i right click on it it "peek at desktop" is grayed out, but it has a check by it.

when i go to taskbar and start menu properties it has the same thing, "use aero peek to preview the desktop" is grayed out but checked.

the same is true when i hover over the boxes in the taskbar, it gives the tiny popup box, but no preview of the main window.

back in vista when i would turn off aero to increase performance in games i would have to restart to get some aero features back but this hasnt reverted to normal even after restarting. what gives?

It sounds like you just disabled Aero entirely, or it disabled itself.

Just see if you can re-enable Aero. If it's already on, disable and then re-enable?

    Try these

1 . You want 'Windows Color and Appearance' Open classic appearance properties for more color options in the appearance tab there should be a list for 'Color scheme:', windows Aero should be at the top.

    2. click on start & in the start search box type in Services.msc. When you open that, search for a service by the name of themes, & make sure its
status is started. If not then start it.

or try this ( it for Vista but it should work for win7)

    themes is running...

aero is on because transparency still works just fine

couldnt find anything aero related in any "color scheme" menu

that troubleshooting utility is actually built into windows 7 apparently and it couldnt find any problem

    heres a pic:

    hmm Try enabling these

Control Panel > Performance Information and Tools > Adjust Visual Effects

    * Animate controls and elements inside windows
    * Enable desktop composition
    * Use visual styles on windows and buttons.

Have you changed your color settings? Make sure it is 32 bit

Make sure you have an Aero theme selected also.

Didn't change any color settings, checked that it's set to 32-bit

I had my own custom theme with my own wallpapers and stuff, but i changed it to one of the default aero themes and restarted. still doing the same thing.

this is really frustrating, could it be a video driver? I know it's up to date but I'm just wondering...

I don't think it is the driver. Or the profile.

Rolling back the driver is worth a try. Redo the WEI.
