I received my disc to upgrade to windows 7 and was wondering how I could perform a clean install? I didn't perform it when I had vista installed as it was installed for me at bestbuy. I know that a clean install deletes everything that was on my laptop but I backed up everything onto an external harddrive using acronis true image. After the clean install, I can I use my programs and access my files again?

Probably should first download the Windows 7 drivers from your manufacturer onto a Flashdisk.

Then just boot your system using the upgrade disk. You'll be asked the option to either Upgrade or Custom Install. Choose Custom Install. Install your drivers next. Install programs, etc.

Thank you for that link, it has helped. I want to keep my acronis true image and found that it is not compatible with windows 7. How can I keep it? I was planning on upgrading to 2010 but am not sure when or how to go about doing it.

To keep an old program, you can either a) do an upgrade instead of a clean install or b) not move to Win 7. If you choose the clean install method, you are going to have to reinstall Acronis True image.

Of course if your acronis true image is not compatable with windows 7, even performing an upgrade will not allow the old program to work. What version of Acronis are you using? Acronis TI 2009 is compatable with W7, that is what I am using.

Performing an upgrade will keep the program installed. True, whether or not it will continue to work is another question.

A clean install will definitely cause the program to cease function.

Clean/custom install are overrated. Don't use it unless you have specific reason--like to rid your system of a lot of accumulated of junk on your computer.

A clean install basically means you have to start from scratch. A lot of needless work, especially if your system is relatively new.

    I don't think Clean/Custom Installation is overrated.
It's the BEST if your PC doesn't have any thing yet on the specific partition you're going to install Windows 7.
If there's too much of important files on the specific partition you're going to install, then, just do UPGRADE.
After all, I highly recommended everyone to do a CLEAN installation.
Stabler, errors free and virus free.
