I downloaded a legal iso copy of windows 7 home premium that is 3gb and burned it on a blank dvd to boot up at start up for installion.

My question is that why is it that the windows dvd installation is only about 3-4gb then after finishing the clean install of the windows 7, it ends up being around 15-20gb? Where did the 15gb come from?

During the installation, you must have noticed a window saying "Expanding files". This is where the 15-20 GB comes from, the files in the DVD are compressed, they should be uncompressed for Windows to work in your laptop.
