I've been using W7 now for a couple of days. It's working great except I don't really like the way some fonts look. In some places they look griddy (if that is the correct word). The tab bar of IE8 is a good example. Screenshot included.

While on other places they look fine.

I tried changing Cleartype settings but that did not seem to help. Any ideas?

Interesting, I've always found Cleartype in XP to be the worst.

Are you at the default zoom level? IE doesn't have great scaling when it zooms.

    No zooming.

The difference might also be caused by the fact that I'm connecting Win7 through DVI, while XP through VGA.

Maybe the DVI is crisper, making individual pixels more visible.

I tend to think that this has to do with the gpu driver and the resolution support under W7 at the moment. It differs from one machine to another as I have noticed between the P-7811FX (nVidia gpu) and the old Sager (ATI gpu).

    cheers ...

The only way to compare properly is to hook them up identically. VGA to VGA and/or DVI ti DVI.

Untill you do that, you've got too many variables to come to any sane conclusion.

I notice almost no difference between the 2 OS's. Also, shouldn't this be in the Windows 7 section?

In W7, you can adjust Cleartype to your tastes.

It may be the connections, as you've already suggested. I find cleartype to be great in Vista and 7.

That's 100% smooth, but that's not the tab bar. This is the tab bar:

    I think you're right. it's the font I don't like.

That's exactly what I mean. The first screenshot you posted looks like what I want, this one has the griddy look.

I don't think it's the clear type issue. It should be the GPU drivers (in my laptop), which doesn't allow me to change the flat panel scaling in Windows 7 64-bit and so low resolution images look grainy. I am using 185.85 driver from MS update.

Please reduce your images down to a reasonable size so members don't have to scroll to see them. Thank you.

I'm using 186.18 and nvidia control panel will not allow me to select use nvidia scaling either--reverts to using built in display scaling. i do like the way that 7 scales web pages--much improvement there-- :)

Cleartype is supposed to be blurry when zoomed in on, right? This tech is supposed to compensate for the jagginess of LCD panels. Cleartype smooths out parts of the font characters so they look good on LCDs (to most people).

As you can see some fonts look 100% smooth when zoomed in.

I've connected Win 7 through VGA now, still slightly more jaggy than XP.
