    Hey guys,

Do I need drivers written specifically for windows 7, or do vista drivers work? Is it hard to find Windows 7 drivers right now if that's what I need?

Thanks, trying to decide if I should make the switch

Vista drivers will work [most of the time].

When I installed the Windows 7 RC on my 8510p, and before HP offered Win 7 support for that notebook, all of the drivers worked except for the TPM drivers and Protect Tools.

Although, when I installed Windows 7 I only needed to install a couple of drivers, not everything. ;)

Installed Win 7 on a two+ year old laptop - found most drivers by itself and the others I used the Vista ones. (A Sony, and no driver upgrades/support from Sony either)
Take the plunge, switch to windows 7, I've converted 3 computers over already.

Almost all laptop manufacturers have support for Windows 7 now. Even ATI is using proper mobile drivers, instead of all the bullcrap that we used to have to deal with.

Most Vista drivers will work, just make sure you are using 32 bit drivers for a 32 bit OS and the same goes for 64 bit, use 64 bit drivers.

Advice offered to another user (in the HP forum). Substitute MSI for HP and you'll be all set......

    a) if you have an intel based machine, get updated drivers from intel.
    b) if you have an amd based machine, get updated drivers from amd.
    c) if you have ati chipsets or video, get updated drivers from ati/amd.
    d) if you have nvidia chipsets or video, get updated drivers from nvidia
    e) if you have realtek sound or networking, get updated drivers from realtek
    f) if you have a lightscribe drive, get updated lightscribe drivers from lightscribe.

    And so on.

As far as HP software, you will need to invest some time in for formerly top-of-the-line laptop to discover the most current XP (vista/win7) versions of that software. Then you will need to go to hp.com to actually download the software.

There is very little 'HP Software' that can't be replaced and IMPROVED on with freeware/shareware. A little research on your part is necessary to find these.

I will bet however that if you actually invest the research time to find HP software, you will find one or three or ten lists that document all of the software, other users favorite alternatives, as well as easy-to-click-on download links.

    Any questions?

How do I find out the manufacturer and model of each part? I'm not sure of my wireless card, bluetooth, or webcam or card reader

    look in your device manager.

It could be that you need to search for some drivers, get them installed, look at device manager again, then search for more drivers.

google ''windows 7'' ''your laptop name/model'' i am sure you will find some good stuff ;)
i have just installed windows 7 (32 bit as 64 bit sound not working) on a 4 year old laptop and only needed the realtek sound drivers and vista wireless driver.
if you add you laptop model and some specs to your post, or better, to you sig, you will get a better response.
