So I went ahead and ordered Windows 7 because I heard good things about it and they had such a great deal last week on the upgrade.

I'm going to take the recovery discs I made and make a clean vista install before I upgrade to Windows 7.

    but

My question is that since I haven't tried the RC I'm not sure what I'm going to think of it so is it possible to take my HP Recovery Discs and make 2 Vista installs and upgrade one of them so that I can have a dual boot? Is it possible for me to do this?

    Thanks :)

I strongly recommend calling Microsoft customer support hotline. Escalate the issue so you can speak with the manager. I find this generally helps a lot in resolving technical issues of these sorts. Cheers and good luck mate!

If you have a second hard drive, you can install Vista on the second drive and keep it handy in case there is a problem with your Windows 7 installation. However, there really isn't a need to do that, since you can always reinstall Vista if the Windows 7 install goes awry.

or, use something like VirtualBox to create a machine inside a machine and run your tests/legacy that way. no dual boot needed.

So? I have three or four 2.5" SATA drives for my e1705. It takes about 20 seconds for me to swap drives.

You have to keep the HD compartment open, right? How then do you go mobile with the laptop?

You lost me. I never said I juggle multiple drives and "go mobile with the laptop". I said I have three or four drives that I use with my computer. BTW - my drive is secured with two screws: remove the screws, slide out the drive, install the replacement drive, install the screws, boot.

No problem. I just wanted the OP to know that you can swap drives on a laptop.
