So I have my drive partitioned like so: 125gb for Windows, 25gb for Linux, and the rest I don't really know. I saw some of the rest was OEM stuff and the other stuff was 1gb of something (BTW, any way to find out what the other partitions really are? Is there a software?)

Anyhow, so I installed Windows 7 on the 125gb partition and now I only have 113gb left!!! The Windows 7 system files are only 5 gb (abouts). What is taking up the other space?

And, also, I want to get rid of Ubuntu and do a clean install of Mandriva on the 25 gb, what would be the best way of doing that?

    thanks.

pagefile.sys and hyberfil.sys, make the hidden and system files visible and you'll see those two files on your system partition.

System restore points also take up space. They allow you to revert back to previous settings should your OS become corrupt or stop working properly.

    125GB total - 113GB free = 12GB used

    12GB used - 5GB folders = 7GB unknown.

If he has 4GB RAM installed, as I do, then those two files probably have:
    4GB pagefile.sys + 3GB hiberfil.sys = 7GB

kill the linux-only partitions and run your linux instances on VirtualBox.

Yes as others have said, hibernate file.

If you don't hibernate your system then disable it. Here's How:
    http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/10/25/how-to-turn-off-and-disable-hibernation-in-windows-vista/

If you want to reduce system restore size, then here's how to:
    http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/3187/disable-system-restore-in-windows-7/

I had to disable system restore, then renable it to get back 40GB in my Windows Vista. For Win7 it's been well behaved.

    Pagefile you need to keep.

To verify, open "Computer" or "Windows Explorer" (Windows Key + E) hit your ALT key to bring up the menus, select Tools, Folder Options, View Tab. Deselect "Hide Protected Operating System Files" and select "Show Hidden Files, Folders, and Drives" option. Then in your main C: drive in Windows Explorer (or wherever) you should see pagefile.sys and hiberfil.sys. This will show if these files exist, and their size.

Don't forget to go back and hide system files and folders, otherwise you'll see phantom files on your desktop and elsewhere and don't want to accidentally delete them!
