If I make an image of my HDD using the windows 7 Backup program, say to another internal HDD, can I then transfer that image file(or files) to an external HDD without incurring any problems on a subsequent restore from the external drive?

    Thanks,
    Harvey

You should not have any problems with this. Make sure you maintain the structure of the image.

As mentioned by metril, if you copy the whole directory over, you are fine.

It actually is just a VHD together with some helping metadata.
