I think October 23rd might be a resonable date for Windows 7 to be released, since it is right before Christmas shopping season starts, and with Windows 7 being nearly feature complete, I don't see why they can't push out a few release candidates to test between now and then, and launch it just before shopping season. I do have my doubts about this possiblity, however.

As much as I want to think that Windows 7 will be release on October 23rd, I just think that between now and then, there might be major kinks that still needs ironing out which might push the release back to Q1 of 2010. Microsoft has been tightlipped about Windows 7, so we don't really know what's up its sleeves. It's way too early to tell. Microsoft is, of course, notororious for delaying products at the last minute, so I would set October 23rd as a preliminary date, but I would EXPECT that it be pushed back much further.

I think vista was origonally supposed to be released Oct 2006... it was actually launched Jan 30 2007.

because acer said so... I'm skeptical too... Acer promised me a "Vista upgrade disk...", they promised me they would fix my lemon...". lol, I Think it's a good guide line, but don't count on it.

Well, it was. It RTM'd in late October and was released to volume subscribers and to Technet and MSDN in the fall of 2006. It was released in the retail channel at the end of January 2007.

The October retail release on W7 makes sense to me with regards to much of what I hear from various pundits who seem to anticipate W7 to RTM in July. If that's the case and they follow the same release methodology as with Vista, then that'd point to an October retail release.

That said, I'm not necessarily buying this October 23 date. Even if that's the anticipated schedule I can't believe that they'd be specifying an actual hard date this soon.

October? Pfff...man I wish that thing could be released tomorrow. I'm still using Windows 7 Beta 7000 with Zero issues. One hell-uv-an OS!

I am running Windows 7 RC 1 on an Acer Aspire 5315 with no issues. I had to install launch manager and empowering software in compatibility mode other then that everything I tried worked.

Only thing I hate is when I pause for a min or two my screen dim. I read this is to save battery life but, it does it on ac power also.

You can change this by going to the orb and then running "power options" you can change your power options there!

Leo Laporte and Paul Thurrott seem to think 7 will be released in time for back to school season, so late July/early August. I don't know how long companies usually take to fix bugs, but 2.5 months seems about right to me.

Ideally, back to school season would be nice because it's a very big buying season for laptops. In some places, it's a bigger season than Christmas so if Windows 7 was to be finished for that date, it'd be quite a good snatch :D

However, if they don't they have until the holidays to get their bugs and kinks fixed so October-November sounds like a probable release date as well.

They could always risk releasing 7 in September anyways and work out the final kinks later on.

Well if they can manage an August release at the same time as most manufacturer and resellers have their sales, it'll already widely give Windows 7 an early widespread popularity.

Besides, apparently the beta has few flaws form what I hear of the users who tried it so I don't suppose there's thousands of things to tweak either.

Personally, I think an OS is never really complete until SP1 anyways soooo.
