So i dont know what happened, this just happened suddenly, never updated anything, but suddenly my Windows now wont shut down

it will mostly stuck at shutting down

i have seen many forums now, some said it might be audio driver, some said it's the Nvidia service

i have tried scanning my system ( which is highly unlikely to have virus as i dont go to websites that is not common ) also i dont download s from the Internet

i also did a HDD scan, CCleaner cleaning, but no solution

can you guys help me to think of the possibility of what is wrong?

because i dont think i did something that should cause this as i dont play around with registry

i am using Asus U36-SD and Win7 Pro

    thanks!

I would run task manager before you shut down to see what tasks are running. It sounds like a task is running and Windows 7 won't shut down as it's waiting for it to close first.

Check your system logs for exclamation points to see if you can narrow it down a bit further. Hopefully there will be an entry stating that a program was waiting to shut down.

Even though you said you haven't updated anything; Is MS Updates set to not download updates 'automatically'? Check your Windows Updates 'History' to rule out a recent update as the issue. If you see something recently that you are not sure of uninstall it and try restarting.

As Rodster basically mentioned above; check Event Viewer for ideas. 'Application', 'System' etc.

Maybe also try a 'System Restore' via All Programs --> Accessories --> System tools.....to a day when all was well.

Try booting into Safe Mode...and then try shutting down. If you can then it's most likely a application/third-party driver that's not related to the Operating System directly.

but how do i check the system logs to see which is giving error during the shutting down so i can post it here for you guys windows expert to see

well, basically during shut down, there are still pretty much a lot of programs running ( system thing ) not like Photoshop program or Firefox ( They are all closed before i shut down )

    thanks

^^^ Press the Start button and type event....select the first option in the list and look through the Windows Logs...more so the 'Application and System' logs for errors that may be related to your issue.

If I may, a far BETTER option to view slow shutdown causes would be in the event viewer, but

    APPLICATION AND SERVICES LOGS > MICROSOFT > WINDOWS > DIAGNOSTICS_PERFORMANCE > OPERATION

Under EVENT ID, you will see a variety of event Codes 100,200,300,400,500

Look for 200 codes, which record shutdown events

that actually means that it is NOT windows that is closing down slowly.

    Shutdown Duration : 13740ms
    IsDegradation : false

means the shut down of WINDOWS takes place in 13.74 seconds. Is this a degraded shutdown, "NO" (or false)

Instead, what is happening is something else is not shutting down and Windows is waiting for it to finish so that it can shutdown.

Next step would be to do the following

    START > type
    msconfig
    in the bottom search box.

    Click the MSCONFIG
    When the msconfig utility appears
    Go to the STARTUP tab
    click the DISABLE ALL button.

    Reboot.

    Now, shutdown one more time

Does the slow shutdown occur pn this second shutdown?

If no, then one of your startup programs is causing the issue.

Recheck each one in the msconfig utility ON AT A TIME

    Reboot, and shut down.

This way you will determine what is causing the slow shutdown

ok, so i disabled everything and then manually enable them 1 by 1

so far i think it kinda fixed it?

because before, whenever i use the computer for longer than 5 min, it will have the shut down hang

but now it seems like shutting down just fine?

i am still not sure what is the cause, lol but it kinda work i think

although the Steam apps, YM and MSN is not on start up anymore ( which is good i guess )

Right, but until you re-enable all of them until you have the shutdown hang issue we won't know which app was causing the problem.

So re-enable each, one at a time to try and replicate the issue. I would like to know (and i'm sure others too) which program was the cause.

Did re enable all of them 1 by 1

nothing seems to cause the hang now

the only thing that isnt back from the start up is the Steam Apps, YM and MSN ( as it was not on the list )

so i guess that have to be one of them?

i tried restarting again after like 10 min of use, shut down now works, ( used to if i use it for more than a couple of minute, one of the apps will cause that

so i guess that is 1 out of 3 of those hahah

but i will report back here if the hangs continue on the shutting down

but so far, it's back to normal

    thanks a bunch man! repped!!

sorry looks like i spoke too soon

it's still hanging at the Shutting down

i tried to do what you told me to, disable 1 by 1 and re enable them after each restart

it does fine with shutting down when i just re enable them

but like after long use, whenever i want to shut down again, it's stuck again on the shutting down window

Earlier in the thread, someone suggested looking through Applications and System event logs.

    Did you do that?

Any YELLOW !s or RED Xs at the time of shut down?

Open the event viewer (type that in the search bar of the start menu), in the left side pane (console tree), open the drop down menu for windows log and there you'll be able to access the Applications and system logs.

    ok got it

but on the Applications tab Under the Windows Log, there is no Event ID that is 200 ( shutdown event ID )

there is like 6000 events haha, so which one should i find there?

Look for system logs as well. You are looking for anything with a yellow triangle or red circle with an exclamation mark. Then you can look at the specific event ID.

right--the 200 events are only in the other log I was referring to.

You are looking for a RED X or Yellow ! that occurs when you are shutting down so you may want to note the time, shut down, and then look at the logs on restart.
