Is there a way to legally purchase just a product key for Windows 7? I'm thinking of reinstalling Windows 7 on my Thinkpad, but I'd need a new key, and I really don't want to spend $100 on a whole new copy of 7.

I know you can do so with Office. A Google Search presents me with some uncertain data... On some other forums, they say you can, but doesn't say where. Maybe contact Microsoft?

re-installing as in you already have it on there?

the code should be on the bottom of the laptop

Why do you need a NEW key? Did your laptop already come with Win7 preinstalled?

If you want a new key, then you have to pay full price for the software. Unless you want to buy a key from ebay, but those run the risk of becoming blacklisted later if they were from a technet account.

I bought a Windows 7 Pro key from eCRATER.com about 6 months ago, and it hasn't been blacklisted yet.

Oh that sounds trustworthy if you're worried about that.

You do not need a new key if you're installing the same version of Windows.

it's only $100 bucks for the ultimate retail version sealed and come with disk and everything. I bought it on ebay. If you only by the key, then you are running a risk of being black listed. Which is annoying because you can not change wallpaper.

What I'm saying is, it's been awhile maybe it won't be blacklisted.
