    Will there be any difference between these? I already have Win 7 RTM and was wondering if I can use the same one or get the retail one on OCt 22?

    It's the same thing. RTM means release to manufacturing.

    RTM = Retail.

    Until a Service Pack is released and integrated into the retail discs anyway.

    RTM is the same thing as the retail, until the Service Packs are released.

    Well, see, you've gone and ruined it JCMS. 4 people saying that it's the same means that it's the same. But if you introduce a 5th person you get this quantum information quality warp and now I don't know what to believe.

    Windows 7 RTM is a unicorn.

    Great. Look what you've done.

    I think you are not getting some info. RTM is release to manufaturing. It is released to the manufaturers so that all companies can check the OS with their own system inorder to be fully compatiable. So, its not necessary that the same version should be compatiable to all. So, if needed there are few changes in the OS for some companies inorder to overcome the problem. So, if RTM version works well with all the manufaturers then its all same but if it doesnot then its different. Atleast a couple of lines of codes. :p

    RTM is gold, meaning the code is done. Finalized. Finished. Finnish Unicorns.

    Any further updates are released through Windows Updates.

    The only difference will be the removal of any and all RTM branding, not that you can see any right now unless you know where to look and with what tool. Lastly, the version number will be adjusted from 6.1.7600.xxxxx to 7.0 I suppose. All thru Windows updates.

    Ok I have a question, people are saying "it's the same until Service Packs", but RTMs can get Service Packs no?

    Unless they simply mean that the initial disc will be different because of the SPs already installed(ex: a regular Vista disc vs a Vista SP2 disc)

    No, I assume RTM will get Service Packs, seeing as it's the final release. They mean that when they start integrating Service Packs into the Install Discs.

    I hope the Windows 7 RTM can be use nicely for the future.
    If not, we need to bang our money again. >.<
    Hopefully, it can integrated with SP.

    Is RTM the same as retail? Or do I need to buy a new copy?

    "BOOM!" Win7 RTM is not the same as SP any longer bc they blowd up while in production.

    In other news, kids were caught playing on a playground today. How usual is that Bob?

    I'm guessing that RTM builds such as those acquired via MSDNAA programs will receive a slurry of updates on W7 official release date.

    Since MS updates are usually released on the second Tuesday of each month, I'm guessing that any W7 updates not released on October 13th will have to wait until November 10th. Since the official release date (October 22nd) is a Thursday I don't think we'll see any updates on that day.

    Actually, there was an update for 7 64bit today. A slurry of updates is not going to happen. The only ones I have seen since my install have been Defender updates. Only a few for 7.

    Now with that said, I can see a slurry of driver updates as we approach launch in Oct.

    Yes, only updates I've received have been Defender and drivers as well.

    Either way, the RTM has been submitted for mastering and nothing will change that at this point in time. I'm sure 90% of it is complete, and soon to be distributed to retail stores.

    Wrong!
    Beta = Beta
    RC = Release Candidate
    RTM = Release To Manufacture(we are paying for it)
    Retail = Has been Manufacture
    Please don't spread wrong information. Thanks.

    100000000000000000000000000000% PERCENT FALSE. DONT POST INFO YOU DONT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT

    IF YOU OWN a oem machine like dell or hp that came with vista or will with win7 you got the rtm version or some call it oem. the retail is simply what you buy off the shelf or from a vendor. also note rtm/oem is locked to install on the one pc you install it on. technically its against eula to move it. retail can be transfered

    RTM is the period when the retail version is released to manufacturers before being released to the general public. It is the final code. It is the same as what will be released on Oct 22. If there are any changes between now and Oct 22, all copies of Windows 7 (RTM and retail) will be updated through Windows Update.

    well no. if you get a dell say that comes with it its against the terms to move it to another pc same with oem copies bought from like newegg. *technically* only retail can be moved

    What 120 day trial? I believe the majority of RTM versions in use are activated on permanent keys obtained from MSDN, Technet, or MSDN-AA.

    Didn't Microsoft update the RTM version build number? Weren't there some kernel updates or something?

    We will see those on or near W7 release.

    Correct. I took the question as an assumption that most RTM installation are using the trial methodologies; I suspect many if not most are fully activated though.
