Hi all, this is my first post here in a long time... desperately looking for some help. (Apologies if this is the wrong section for this post, I hope the mods will move accordingly.)

I have an Asus UX31 and a few days ago I was watching a video on YouTube and suddenly blue-screened for the first time in a long while, on restarting Windows iniated check disk, and I let it run thinking it would be a good idea. However when I tried to logon to my user profile Windows loaded a temporary profile instead.

I'm using the standard Win 7 Home Premium that came preloaded on the laptop, I only use the one user profile which has admin rights and afaik this is definitely not virus/malware related.

Now I've tried some solutions I've found online (namely deleting the temp profile from the registry + and trying check disk again).

As a final solution I've created another admin account to try and copy the files over.... however when I try to access the original user folder from C:/Users/ it's effectively empty but the files are obviously still there as my hard drive capacity is still the same.

I'm pretty out of my depth atm so I'd appreciate any input from anyone with experience of something like this, specifically relating to recovering the user profile - or at least gaining access to the data. (Sidenote: the UX31 uses a proprietary SSD format afaik so any solutions of accessing the data by removing that are probably a no-go.)

    Thanks

There may be a more elegant solution but I would create a live CD or USB for ubuntu and boot from it.
    1. DL the .iso file from here = 12.04.2 LTS 32 bit , Download Ubuntu Desktop | Ubuntu
    2. Create bootable media Download Ubuntu Desktop | Ubuntu
Once you are running Ubuntu from the media do not install, just follow the "try before you install " instructions
Launch File manager with the second button on the left side of the screen, naviate to file system + you should be able to copy the files to another location.

OR use an imaging program such as Free Backup Software: Paragon Backup & Recovery Free Edition - Overview, create an image on an external drive, the use paragon to manipulate the files from the "bad" profile.

The problem may lie in Chkdsk having a bunch of broken files that it named under the root directory, or elsewhere, as ~*.chk These may have been all your data files and even directory data. If this is to be the case TBH I am not sure what you would do other than A LOT of manual work.

Hard to tell with out being there to see the issue. System recovery might be of help, not too sure if it will even if its data were not damaged as well.

What was the cause for the blue screen, anyway? You can use WhoCrashed or Windows Debugger tool to analyze the error. Or upload your minidump file(s) for others to analyze.
