I am thinking of upgrading the home edition to ultimate. The two reasons are the bitlocker and the xp mode. What do you think?

bitlocker has been cracked, use truecrypt.

xp mode? use virtual box shared folders (vmware does this too).

Agreed. Not worth paying the premium for Ultimate just for those two features when you can always get 3rd-party programs that work just the same or even better.

BitLocker is far from cracked, one attack requires that you get to the computer with-in 5 seconds to 2 minutes (depending on outside temp) and a you have to use a cross-over IEEE1394 cable and the commecially available attack requires that you have physical access to the running computer using and it uses full disk forensics...

If you need Windows 7 Enterprise and do not have an EA then Ultimate is for you, typically BitLocker and MUI are the biggies...

If you don't have a copy of Windows xp license in handy, it's worth it. Windows xp license will cost you more than the upgrade price.

If you know how to get xp license illegally or free, then it's not worth it.

for the OP , no it's not worth it , buy software that can do this stuff better , and you will also have better support .

i actually though that way until Microsoft started releasing low price edition for developed countries and students around the world , windows used to cost around 150$ here in Egypt while average income was around that price , so guess what , no one wanted to buy a software worth 30 days of working 10 hours a day , finally last year they started handing out low priced editions for students that cost around 15$ and office around 10$ which is quite reasonable, furthermore msdnaa is now available for Eng. students , so now i can feel bad if i pirated their software :D

Upgrading to Windows 7 will cost less than using vmware/virtualbox/any other free virtual machine software + windows xp license.
