How do I go about resolving this? I have the following update, but every time I try running it, it fails. Gives error code 80073712

Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 9 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2761451)

    Code:
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 9 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2761451)

    Download size: 26.9 MB

You may need to restart your computer for this update to take effect.

    Update type: Important

Security issues have been identified that could allow an attacker to compromise a system that is running Microsoft Internet Explorer and gain control over it. You can help protect your system by installing this update from Microsoft. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer.

That seems to be a common error. Have you tried to Google it?

I didn't have any problem doing a download of the update and then manually install the update? I do this for the reason your having problem updating with windows update would cause some kinda unforeseen problem that one can't predict. I download the updates and then install then reboot. But I didn't have problem with that particular update.

I had no issues with installing this update either. One method I've used in updates that continually fail: clear out your temporary files. The idea is to force Windows Update to redownload KB2761451 in case the original update package was corrupted for some reason. If it still fails, try deleting the files in Windows\Software Distribution\Downloads. That's where the update packages are stored. If it still gives you error code 80073712 then one of Windows Update's core components may have gone backwards for some reason. Not sure what the procedure is for analyzing or repairing Windows update.
