I don't get what's so crazy about it, seems easy enough to understand.

Okay. I have a question. This isn't really related to the chart but at the same time it is. I recently bought a netbook with Windows XP. Being me, I tried to dual boot it with Ubuntu and somehow it crashed my XP so I would get a flash of the BSOD then it would go back to the screen with options to boot XP or Ubuntu. After going all through all this trouble, I decided to DL Windows 7 RC and make that my main OS until Windows 7 Home Premium comes out. The question is that while I did buy a laptop with a genuine Windows XP, it has since been erased and is running Windows 7 RC. I do have the product key on the bottom of the netbook. Am I eligible for the Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade or do I have to buy the W7HP Retail? I can't find any info (unless it hasn't been released yet) on how changing the OS works. Will I need to pop in my XP CD (which I don't have) or merely type in my product key? I realize that I'll have to custom/clean install. Any ideas?

Thanks. Sorry for the long post/paragraph, lol.

The chart has an error. It says at the bottom that Windows 2000 can't use the upgrade license, but Microsoft clearly state that Windows 2000 is eligible (it falls with the same sure as XP)

    See at the bottom page:

@ erin3 well you could get any old xp cd and just install that (with your key) and then upgrade that to win 7...

i had to do the same going to vista (i had two xp cd but couldnt find them) so i went to the local computer store (more of a shop that sells custom pcs rather than the parts) and asked could they burn me a copy since it isnt illegal to burn the disc and since i had product keys they said yer fine. 2 mins later i had an xp cd.

you could also try downloading one... but then you might gat viruses etc etc

so just try to find someone that will let you borrow the cd for a day or even if they will burn you a copy.

    hope i helped

    cheers

True, it isn't all that crazy to understand the upgrade path's. I'm actually thrilled that I could do a custom install to move from Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Professional, yet I'm not thrilled that it has to be done via a custom installation. Re-installing Visual Studio 2008 along with it's service pack takes a day in itself, not to mention all the Steam games I have :D. So I'm opting to stick with Windows 7 Home Premium and later on seeing if I can upgrade to Professional with minimal re-installation.
