I have Vista Business cd that came with my Dell notebook. With the upgrade version of an OS, I was thinking you had to insert the license key of the OS you're upgrading (at least if trying to upgrade with installing the previous version of Windows).

Right now I'm using Windows 7 RC1. Hopefully don't have to install Vista then upgrade it to Windows 7.

So I guess the question would be can i buy the upgrade version of windows 7? and if so can I do a clean install with it?

Sadly, no this won't work. You have to use a non-beta/non-RC version of either XP or Vista to be able to upgrade to a licensed copy of Windows 7. It's the one thing holding me back from upgrading my main rig to Windows 7 RC.

that stinks. so the only way would be to take my computer back to vista first or shell out more money for the retail version.

Back in the times of windows 2000, I bought an upgrade version of XP, and if you try to do a clean install, at that time, the installation ask me for the original old install cd, so I inserted and then ask me to remove, and i ended with a clean install of XP, I don't know if this still works.

They send you a product-key and a link to download the iso file. My guess but it's probably that. Well, if you pre-order through amazon or something you'll get the physical box.

Where did you read that? I doubt that MS would give you a link to an ISO.

there are 3 option of ur buying directly from Microsoft, one that you can download the iso file, another is they will ship you the disc and the last option is they will ship you the disc but you can also download the ISO file which cost $15 more. But if ur buying from Amazon or BestBuy, they will ship you the disc with original box :D

To clean install Windows 7 over Windows 7 RC, boot the system with the Windows 7 CD, reformat/repartition, and when it asks you to verify that you have a legit copy of XP/Vista insert your XP/Vista CD, let it verify your OS CD and you're off and running.

I bought a copy of windows xp back when I was in college from my school, anyways, I think it was XP professional. Do I have to get the Windows 7 professional upgrade or would the home premium version work with xp pro.

    Thanks

Any Upgrade version of Windows 7 you purchase will simply ask you to verrify that you own a previous legitimate version of Windows XP or Vista. You do not have to match Professional to Professional etc. In other words, if you have Windows Vista Home basic, and bought Windows 7 Ultimate, or you have Windows Vista Ultimate and bought Windows 7 Home Premium, it doesn't matter.
