I attached my Iomega 1 TB external to my NEW Toshiba Tecra running Windows 7 and it asked if I wanted to change the name of the devise.
Initally my reply was NO, but after a month I decided to say YES.
Windows 7 then prompted my to format my external.
I said NO.
Microsoft support says this is a Win 7 problem that should be addressed in an upcoming service pack.
The drive shows ACTIVE but neither MAC nor Win based machines can access the data.
Any thoughts or solutions short of paying Iomege for a recovery?

So you have data on it? Had you been able to use it before?

Yes and Yes.

Seems as if there went something wrong with the partition table - is this a drive with own power supply?
You might try if you can access the data from a Linux environment, using a Live CD like Knoppix is a good idea here.

Thank you gentlemen, I will give Linux a try.
I can't blame this on my wife. -
You might also try generic data recovery apps. It probably only did a quick format of the drive, so you just lost the file metadata, the files themselves are likely still floating around on the drive.

Linux worked and I recovered all my data and family photos from the past 5 years.
Thanks again.
Windows 7 changed the name of my external
