I am not sure whats changed on my laptop, it always used to auto open usb drives or at least give a prompt asking if i want to open them, now i dont get either now.

I have gone to control panel > auto play and tried to restore defaults but it's never worked or got me back to my laptop even giving a prompt.

    Can anyone help at all?

    Thanks

    James

    See here.
See what value your NoDriveTypeAutoRun key has. That's the one that's often effed up by certain crappy third-party software. Setting it to the default (0x91, 145 decimal) should fix things.

have you tested the usb key in other laptops to see if it works?

go to Device control panel--- manager--USB controllers--- look for the unknown device right click and click for update driver.
otherwise you can go to the motherboard manufacture site and get the driver for USB.
there is also a Fixit service from Microsoft that should help

Did you check both registry locations (HKLM and HKCU)?

It might be worth a try to check the autoplay options in win7's godmode folder:

create a windows 7 godmode folder:
on your desktop or anywhere else, create a new folder. rename the folder to:
    Code:
    GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}
open the folder and there are some autoplay options under the 3rd section.
I don't know if this gives you anymore options than elsewhere in win7.

This is perfectly safe, it simply gives you direct access to a number of policy settings. You'll get a privilege elevation prompt for most of these. Anyone who has access to this could otherwise just directly call up the appropriate MMC snap-in, and achieve exactly the same result.

Yup, the so called "god mode" just gives you easy access to a lot of options available through other means. Like some of us have said before: if someone has direct access to your computer, you have other things to worry about.

I seem to have fixed my issue, I deleted the nodriveautorun from the registry, when i restarted my ext drives all started auto playing again.

Thank you for all your suggestions.
