Which is good. A small form factor of Vista is workable for me. Vista is a good OS, but still sub-par overall. Speed is a huge issue for me, even if it's the "illusion" of speed. I'm one of those guys who hates minimize/maximize transitions, fading menus, and all those desktop effects.

With that said, I have mid-hopes for Windows 7. Then again, 7 is a lucky number.

    Ubuntu 7.10
    Final Fantasy VII
Nitrogen, atomic number 7; compromises majority of atmosphere
Seven Wonders of the ancient world
7-UP, a popular soda; might indicate Windows 7 will be popular
    7-zip, excellent archive tool
    etc..

Yeah, I winged it. So what.

That's okay, after all the stuff Microsoft promised us users never happened with Vista, I too have some doubts about whether they can turn this ship around with Windows 7...

Well, for those still interested in the multi-touch which is essentially incorporating the Surface concept into Windows. The folks at Windows-vista blog just posted this video online...

They really ought to come up with a modular solution:

Fit everything onto 1 DVD for 1 price, but don't have all the content unlocked. Which would be the "Home" edition. Then you pay an extra fee to unlock other portions like "Business" and I guess "Ultimate". This means that 'dumb' users wouldn't have to worry about what version they are buying, and it would be more straightforward to everyone. Except for those without internet. In which case the "Business" features wouldn't be needed anyways.

if you dont put anthing in then you can try any for 30 days

i think they should just have home premuim and business

Oh really? I didn't know that. But I think they may as well drop the premium and just bring it back to XP level. Home, and Business. And the system requirements should be less than those of Vista.. that would certainly attract customers :D .

    I agree, let's see here

Vista Home Basic-Crippled beyond belief, in part to please Intel and their ancient integrated graphics chipset, when Intel could have simply decided to move forward and use the GMA 950 and up which can obviously run Aero fine, and to create a version "just good enough" to be priced the same as an XP home upgrade that had way more features and looked less ugly to boot.

Ultimate-What's more Ultimate than language packs (that, IMO, should be available for every Windows version)? ooh I know-Texas Hold Em, and an animated, RAM sucking, desktop...NOT!

i think that in home. user should just choose eye candy or '80s style desktop and install the features(media center, aero, etc)

and it alsmost about ime to get rid of x86 and just include x64 with x86 backward compatiablty
even though it will render p4 and amd xp back

they have to change it by 2038 anyways

and windows 7 should be more customazble instead of patching theme and slowing down computers

The 2038 bug is a linux bug which has already been fixed. x64 is needed if you want more than 4 GB of RAM. Either way, Windows 7 should be x64 only but it won't.

Go on to vista... about to upgrade all my computers to vista now...

It is in good fashion to be a vista troll troll right now... although, the job is getting phased out.

Vista is a great os unless you have some specific reason not to upgrade. I run thousands of dollars of software and build software and don't have any issues... unless you have something highly specific, you should not have any issues.

Of course, don't be like an an idiot I read about and think you don't have to upgrade your software... lol... that is a must... although, Microsoft does have lists of what works and what does not. You are upgrading from an old OS, I'd expect you to have issues with software.

Vista does a good job with it multi core already. 1GB + dual core is more performant under Vista than 2GB + single core from my home experiance

Thanks for the post dondadah88. All I can say is, if that's what MS thinks constitutes advancement in OS design, they've been smoking something far more serious than wacky-weed over there in Redmond. If this is intended to be illustrative of the "advances" Win7 will contain, I'll be sure to get my kiddies a next-gen etch-a-sketch with Win7 embedded to keep them occupied while I do real stuff on my computer with some linux variant installed.

    Hear hear

I mean they are cool little features, but what makes an incredible OS if there is a great interface combined with speed, stability, security and compatibility. and of course we all like it when you are not using all of the system ram in your comp(1gb) like vista does to run common apps. I imagine MS thinks the Mac os is popular because of all the gadgets that come with it when in fact its the historic stability and speed that are bringing folks to the Macs.

Its kind of ironic that were I work (NASA/Goddard space flight center) we are beginning to look into Linux as out only alternative, since XP is really beginning to show its age, Macs are to expensive and Vista is just not an option (for to many reasons to list) In my area almost all of the servers have switched over to linux and many of the desktops are switching over to RedHat and Solaris. MS had better watch out, when large companies begin switching to the alternatives I doubt the common market will be far behind. All I can say is Windows 7 needs to be a big improvement or MS is in trouble.

Are you serious? They were just showcasing some multi-touch features that will be included in Windows 7 for touch-screen pcs. The stuff you saw there was no-where near final.

There are still 1.5 years to go before Windows 7 is supposed to be ready. The GUI looks straight from Vista.. probably because they're doing the back end work first, so they're reusing the old GUI. This isn't to say they aren't working on the new look, but it certainly isn't going to be close to final for a while.

Give it a year before you actually start seeing some official Windows 7 gui.

Yeah, this thread is hilarious. They are already making their minds up about an OS that is coming out two years from now. And this presentation wasn't to show all of the features off because they aren't even done developing them yet. And as I've said before, they work on the GUI last. Ignorance at its best.
